Relative Strangers is a 2006 comedy film. It is about a 34 year old psychologist, Richard Clayton (née Paul Tuminaro) (Ron Livingston) whose parents reveal to him that he was adopted. He then sets out to find out who his biological parents are, but disaster ensues when it turns out that his real mother (Kathy Bates) and father (Danny DeVito) are crude, lower class carnies.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger greeted his Twins (1988/I) costar Danny DeVito on a location set to congratulate him on his efforts to produce the film in California, rather than succumb to the tax lures and lower labor costs offered by other states. DeVito acknowledged that he had to persuade the film's cast and crew to take pay cuts in order to offset the lower production costs that other states offered. They're "working for much less than they normally work for".
The plot of this movie is a marriage of a Second City skit by Greg Glienna (The Manures) and one of his best friends' life story. His friend, who was born as Sean M. Dorgan and later adopted and renamed Paul A. Tuminaro, found his birth mother in the mid 1990s. The "original" Richard Clayton can be seen in several scenes as a close friend of Richard both at his party and also standing up at his wedding. The character Paul plays in the movie is named Sean M. Dorgan.
