Ransom is a Golden Globe nominated thriller film released in 1996, starring Mel Gibson, Rene Russo, and Gary Sinise and directed by Ron Howard. The Movie was nominated Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for Mel Gibson.
The original idea for the story was from an episode of "The United States Steel Hour" named "Fearful Decision" that aired in 1954. It was then remade into the feature length film Ransom! (1956) written by Richard Maibaum and Cyril Hume starring Glenn Ford, Donna Reed and Leslie Nielsen. The film also was influenced by King's Ransom, a police procedural novel by Ed McBain which was, in turn, the basis for Akira Kurosawa's 1963 film High and Low. The Movie was nominated Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for Mel Gibson.
Ransom! is a 1956 crime drama examining the reactions of parents, police, and the public to a kidnapping. Written by Richard Maibaum and Cyril Hume, the film was based on a popular episode of "The United States Steel Hour" titled "Fearful Decision," which aired in 1954. Directed by stage and television veteran Alex Segal, the film starred Glenn Ford, Donna Reed, and Leslie Nielsen.
The film and original teleplay were remade by Ron Howard as the 1996 film Ransom.

A casual remark by newspaper reporter Charlie Telfer (Leslie Nielsen) makes him change his mind. Despite the pleas from his wife Edith (Donna Reed) and brother Al (Ainslie Pryor), and the resultant condemnation of the press and public, Stannard goes on a nation-wide television program, displays the money and warns the kidnapper that not one cent will be paid for ransom; instead the money will be used to track down the kidnapper if Andy isn't returned unharmed.
