Ramón D. Santiago (born August 31, 1979) is a Dominican Major League Baseball player who plays for the Detroit Tigers and previously the Seattle Mariners. He recently was called back up to the Tigers after playing most of with the Toledo Mudhens, the Tigers AAA affiliate. He was born in Las Matas de Farfan, Dominican Republic. He has spent most of his limited Major League career at shortstop, but has also played a significant amount of time at second base, as well as third. Ramón played for the Tigers from - and , and played for the Mariners from - . Ramon came up as a rookie for the Tigers in 2002, but never fulfilled his potential at shortstop. He was a top prospect in the Tigers minor league system, as he and Omar Infante were expected to fulfill the shortstop/second base role. He did not do well offensively-in fact was a Triple Crown loser in 2003. So the Mariners ended up getting a hold of him in a deal for Carlos Guillén. During his tenure with the Mariners, he was a utility infielder, used mainly for his defensive skills. His struggles continued to be at offense, and he spent a lot of his time in the minor leagues for the Tacoma Rainiers. The Tigers reacquired Santiago as a free agent to help strengthen their defense up the middle prior to the '06 season. Santiago's glove seems to be his promise in the big leagues as he continues to dominate defensively.
Ramon Santiago may not be a superstar player, but is a very valuable role player. Ramon Santiago and Omar Infante were emerging stars back in the early 2000s. They were re-united again on the 2006 Tigers bench. Omar Infante has since been traded to the Chicago Cubs and then to the Atlanta Braves.
Santiago was named to the 2002 Topps All-Star Rookie Roster for his performance during his rookie season.
