Radio, released October 2003, is a film directed by Mike Tollin that is based on the true story of T.L. Hanna High School football coach Harold Jones (Ed Harris) and a mentally-challenged young man James Robert Kennedy, nicknamed "Radio" (Cuba Gooding, Jr.). Also starring Debra Winger, and Alfre Woodard, it was based on the December 16 1996 Sports Illustrated article "Someone to Lean On" by Gary Smith about James R. Kennedy and Harold Jones.
James Robert Kennedy (October 14 1947, Anderson, South Carolina, USA), grew up most of his life carrying the fascination of radios. His nickname, Radio, was given to him by the townspeople because of the radio he carried around with him everywhere he went. He still attends T. L. Hanna High School and coaches the football team. He is highly inspirational and considered a local hero. He is known to ask students before football games, "We gonna get that quarterback?"
Tom works the night shift in the immunology department of a hospital. He finds himself a radio for company, but the 24-hours-per-day news reader slowly invades his thoughts. The news centers on the avian flu virus and its transmissibility to humans. Tom decides to isolate himself in the countryside, where he finds a gun and sets about hunting down crows, vultures and other birds that signal the return of spring. But it's already too late: the virus has begun to do its deadly work. The film takes a critical look at how fear is transmitted by the news media, which intentionally amplify the most potentially alarming events, feeding anxiety within their audiences.
