Quartet is a 1981 Merchant Ivory Film, starring Isabelle Adjani, Maggie Smith and Alan Bates set in 1924 Paris. Premiere at Cannes Film Festival entry for Selection Officiel (Official Selection) and won Best actress for Isabelle Adjani.
Quartet is the title of a 1948 film based on stories by W. Somerset Maugham.
The film consists of four separate stories introduced by the author. It was successful enough to produce two sequels Trio (1950) and Encore (1951), and popularised the compendium film format, leading to films such as O. Henry's Full House in 1952.
The screenplays for the stories were all written by R.C. Sherriff.
mself, Host: In my twenties, the critics said I was brutal. In my thirties, they said I was flippant; in my forties, they said I was cynical; in my fifties they said I was competent - and then, in my sixties, they said I was superficial.
The book written by Jean Rhys was originally titled "Postures" when it was published in London in 1928 by Chatto and Windus. When the U.S. publishers Simon and Schuster published it in the United States, the name was changed to "Quartet".
First future film of Hayk Kirakosyan and Martitos Fanosyan.
