Peter Baldwin (born 29 July 1933, Chichester, West Sussex, England) is a British actor.
He is best known for his role of 'Derek Wilton' in the UK soap opera Coronation Street.
Baldwin made several appearances in films (in bit parts and extras) until he landed a main role in the television comedy Girls About Town which ran from 1969 to 1971. He also made guest appearances on other television series such as Menace, The New Dick Van Dyke Show, and Spy Trap.
In 1976 he joined the cast of Coronation Street, playing the character of 'Derek Wilton'. Derek wooed but let down Mavis Riley for many years but eventually the two got married. It was reported that Derek Wilton was one of the favorite characters among the viewers of the show, but in 1997 the character was killed off.
For the year after this, Baldwin made many appearances on talk shows and quiz shows in the UK such as GMTV, This Morning and Crosswits and also returned to the stage for the first time in a decade in A Month of Sundays. He then joined the cast of the TV show Out Of Sight as 'Uncle Gus' until 1999.
Since then he has continued to appear on TV series including The Court Room and Doctors. In 2005 he was a panelist for the Channel 4 quiz show Countdown.
He was married to the former Play School presenter and actress Sarah Long until her death in 1987.
Peter Jeremy Baldwin (b. 12 April 1951 ) is an Australian politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1983 to 1998.
Baldwin was born in Aldershot, England. His family moved to Australia in 1958. He attended Normanhurst Boys' High School in Sydney, later receiving a BEE from the University of Sydney, and a BA from Macquarie University.
Baldwin was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1975 to 1982. In the 1970s he was prominent as a left-wing activist in the Australian Labor Party (ALP), seeking to break the grip over the corrupt right-wing machine that controlled many inner-city branches of the party. As part of his campaign he uncovered rorting of the books in the Enmore branch of the ALP. On July 16 1980, he was brutally bashed in his Marrickville home. Pictures of his battered face were prominent in newspapers and led to increased pressure for reform of the party. No one was ever charged with the assault. Subsequently it has been alleged that the bashing was undertaken by underworld figure Tom Domican acting on suggestions from Labor state secretary, Graham Richardson. In March 2007 Richardson won a settlement against Fairfax of $50,000 AUD for defamation on the basis of this report.
Baldwin held the seat of Sydney in federal parliament from 1983 to 1998. He served as Minister for Employment and Education Services in April 1990, Minister for Higher Education and Employment Services from May 1990 to March 1993 and Minister for Social Security from March 1993 to the defeat of the Keating government in March 1996.
