Pete's Meteor is an Irish drama film released in 1998. It was written and directed by Joe O'Byrne and stars Mike Myers in his first dramatic role.
Mike Myers plays a drug dealer living in the slums of Dublin. He tries to financially provide for the three children of his dead brother. The children's lives are forever changed when a meteor crashes into their backyard.
Myers studied with a linguistic coach to affect an Irish accent for this film. His first attempts, he revealed in an interview on The Daily Show, sounded more like Lucky the Leprechaun than a true Irish dialect, particularly once he was acting in scenes with genuine Irish actors. The young actor portraying his brother was brutally honest: "It's crap!"
Micky is a tough, loudmouth but lovable 12 year old who lives with his younger brother and sister at his Grandmother's (Brenda Fricker) house. One day, a meteorite lands in his backyard and the kids believe that it was sent down to them by their dead parents (who they believe live up in the stars). The government ships away the rock and sends it to the local university. In the children's efforts to retrieve the meteor they believe is theirs, they meet a dorky scientist who finds a place in his heart for the kids (Alfred Molina). Meanwhile, Micky's parent's best friend (Mike Myers), a drug addict (who had promised the parents to take care of the kids) owes drug dealers money and eventually has to hide out after barely escaping a hit.
