The Ottawa Senators (officially the Ottawa Hockey Club) were an amateur, later professional, senior men's ice hockey team based in Ottawa from 1883 to 1954 and a member of the National Hockey League from 1917 to 1934. The Club had several nicknames such as the Generals in the 1890s, Silver Seven from 1903-1907 and the Senators dating from 1901.
Generally acknowledged by hockey historians as one of the greatest teams of the early days of the sport, especially during the period of 1903 to 1927, the Ottawa HC played in the first season during which the Stanley Cup was challenged in 1893. According to the Hockey Hall of Fame, Ottawa won the Stanley Cup a total of ten times, including defeats of challengers, as the Cup was still a challenge trophy. Ottawa won two Stanley Cup challenges in 1910 as well, and are considered to be eleven-time Stanley Cup champions by the NHL. In 1950, Canadian sports editors selected the Senators to be Canada's greatest team in the first half of the 20th century.
