Opeth is a Swedish heavy metal band formed in 1990 in Stockholm. The band has been through several line-up changes, but currently comprises Mikael Åkerfeldt (vocals/guitar), Fredrik Åkesson (guitar), Martin Mendez (bass), Martin "Axe" Axenrot (drums), and Per Wiberg (keyboards). Originally formed by David Isberg, who left the group shortly after enlisting Mikael Åkerfeldt, the band have had 15 official members, with Åkerfeldt remaining the one continual member.
While firmly rooted in Scandinavian death metal, Opeth incorporates progressive metal, progressive rock, folk, and jazz into their usually lengthy songs, most of which are more than ten minutes long. Many songs contain acoustic guitars, and dramatic dynamic shifts, with both growling and clean vocals. The band rarely played live early in their career, with their first world tour taking place after the release of their fifth album, Blackwater Park.
Opeth has released eight studio albums, two live albums, one box set, and one DVD. The band released its debut album Orchid in 1995, but would not see commercial success until the release of 2003's Damnation, which debuted at number 192 Billboard 200. The band's ninth studio album, Watershed, is set to be released on June 3, 2008.
