"Only You (And You Alone)" (often shortened to "Only You") is a pop song composed by Buck Ram and Ande Rand. It was recorded most successfully by The Platters in 1955.
The first recording of the song by The Platters turned out poorly, but after a re-recording, the song scored a major hit when it was released on July 3 1955. The song held strong in the #1 position on the U.S. R & B charts for seven weeks, and hit #5 on the Pop charts. It remained there for 30 weeks, beating out a rival cover version by a white band called The Hilltoppers.
In 1974, Ringo Starr covered this song for his album Goodnight Vienna, and it became a #1 hit on the US Adult Contemporary chart in early 1975. A guide vocal sang by John Lennon that had been left on the multitrack later appeared in 1998 on his Anthology box set. Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers made #95 on the Billboard charts with his 1969 version.
When the Platters track "The Great Pretender" (which eventually surpassed the success of "Only You") was released in the UK as Europe's first introduction to The Platters, "Only You" was included on the flipside.
In the 1956 film Rock Around The Clock The Platters participated with both songs Only You and The Great Pretender.
Country singers Reba McEntire, Travis Tritt and Doug Stone both released cover versions, in 1982, 1995 and 2006, respectively.
The song was covered by Alvin and the Chipmunks for the 2007 live action film.
"Only You" is a song by Scatman John. It was released in Japan as the fourth single from the album Scatman's World, with identical artwork to the "Song of Scatland" single released in other countries.
"Only You" is a ballad written by musician Vince Clarke. He wrote it while with Depeche Mode, and offered it to them when he was leaving. They declined, and Clarke recorded it after forming the duo Yazoo with Alison Moyet. It was an instant success, hitting number two in the UK, and charting in the U.S. (number sixty-seven, Billboard Hot 100), a feat only attained by one other Yazoo single (coincidentally, that single was "Situation," the original UK B-side of "Only You"). "Only You" also made the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart at number thirty-eight.
A remix of "Only You" made the UK Top 40 again in 1999, while reaching number sixteen on the U.S. Billboard magazine Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. The music video for the new version was created using the Houdini 3D animation software package.
Clarke's melody in the song "has a sweetly yearning quality, elegantly arranged by Clarke and producer E.C. Radcliffe in a fashion that links several different monophonic synths together to give the tune more depth and melodic substance" according to All Music Guide blank">http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=33:qnduak3k0mdb. Moyet's vocals, they say, is a "perfectly understated vocal performance, soulful yet dignified in the manner of '70s soul star _Ann Peebles, of Clarke's gentle and romantic lyrics."
Although not a Christmas song, it has become a popular song to play at that time of year, this is probably down to the association with the Flying Pickets version, which was a Christmas hit.
"Only You" is a single by German singer and songwriter, Lou, released in 2006.
The Only You CD single was released in 2005 in Australia prior to the release of Josh's second album, and features one b-side.
The female love interest in the video is played by actress Katherine Heigl. The two later became a couple, having met on this video shoot, and were married on December 23, 2007.
