Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss (Wikipedia.org)

Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss was a 1988 TV movie following the family from A Christmas Story on their annual vacation to Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss, a set of cabins by a lake in Michigan. Ralph, now fourteen, secures a summer job moving furniture along with his friends Flick and Schwartz, thereby risking missing the family vacation. Some creative use of footage from Fritz Lang's Metropolis and an eerie nightmare scene involving a robotic refrigerator provide some additional entertainment. After a small subplot involving the disappearance of the family's dog, Fuzzhead (played by the director's pet dog), the family sets off on an epic journey involving bees, windmills, seedy gas stations, and the inevitable life lessons.

It is based on one of Jean Shepherd's semi-autobiographical short stories. PBS made a series of TV movies based on the Parker family, including The Great American Fourth of July and Other Disasters, and The Phantom of the Open Hearth. Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss originally aired numerous times on the Disney Channel in 1988, and was released by Disney on VHS in 1993.

A movie sequel to A Christmas Story was My Summer Story, which follows a younger Ralphie despite having been made at a later date.

It's summertime in Holman, Indiana, and fourteen year old Ralph Parker can't wait to get his first job. His friends Schwartz and Flick are less enthusiastic, and the job turns into a nightmare presided over by the story's author Jean Shepherd in hilariously unconvincing movie makeup. Ralph's dad hardly can wait for the family's upcoming fishing vacation in Michigan at the movie title's resort but will have to drive their old car through a sea of troubles to get there. Fuzzhead the dog runs away and joins a wealthy family, to the consternation of Mom, who patiently handles uber-whiner little-brother Randy and buys a whirligig as consolation. Written by John Chapot
