Neurosis is an experimental metal band, based out of Oakland, California. Their unique sound draws from influences ranging from hardcore punk and doom metal to dark ambient, industrial, and tribal music as well as incorporating elements of indie, folk music and crust punk. The band is highly regarded as the primary pioneer of its genre, sometimes referred to as post-metal. Critic Brian Russ has described them as "atmospheric hardcore".

Neurosis formed in late 1985 in Oakland, CA as a hardcore punk band and has since developed an experimental rock sound. The band was founded by ex- Violent Coercion members Scott Kelly (vocals, guitars) and Dave Edwardson (bass, backup vocals) along with Jason Roeder (drums), joined later by Steve von Till (vocals, guitars), Noah Landis (organs, piano, sampling), and Josh Graham , who does the visuals for their live performances (previously done by Adam G.
