Michael ("Mike") Anthony Powell (born November 10 1963) is a former American Track and Field athlete, and the holder of the long jump world record.
Mike Powell was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
At the 1991 World Championships in Athletics (Tokyo), he broke Bob Beamon's 23-year-old long jump world record by 5 cm (2 inches), leaping 8.95 m (29 ft 4½ in). The world record still stands. His feat earned him the James E. Sullivan Award and BBC Sports Personality of the Year Overseas Personality Award in 1991.
Powell won long jump silver medals at both the 1988 Olympics and 1992 Olympics. As well as his famous 1991 victory, he won the long jump again at the 1993 World Championships in Athletics, and came third at the 1995 World Championships in Athletics.
After the 1996 Olympics, Powell retired. He returned in 2001 with a goal of competing in the 2004 Olympics, but did not make the American team.
Powell, who attended the University of California, Irvine and later transferred to the University of California at Los Angeles, is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African Americans.
Michael John Powell (born February 3, 1977) is a Welsh cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler. He has played for Glamorgan since 1996, playing in the first team since 1997. His accolades as a player include the Glamorgan Young Player of the Year award in 1997 and the Glamorgan Player of the Year award two years later.
His first appearances at Glamorgan came courtesy of the Second XI Championship in May 1996, and in the 1996 Bain Hogg trophy two weeks later. He played moderately in his first season in the first team of 1997, before making a name for himself in the league in 1998. Participating mostly in Division Two prior to 2001, his team were promoted to Division One in 2002, having performed well at the end of the 2001 season, giving his team hope to progress further in the league.
Next year, Glamorgan finished top of the points table in Division One, before flailing in 2003. However his performances have remained steady since then, keeping his team in the top division until 2005, when the team dropped after winning one of 16 one-day game. Powell still scored above 1,000 runs, but was the team's second best run scorer after David Hemp. In 2006, Powell passed the 1,000-run mark after 11 games, scoring 299 against Essex but falling 10 runs short of Steve James' county record of 309. In 2007 after a successful operation to remove a rib Powell asked for, and was granted, permission to bury it beneath Sophia Gardens http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/glamorgan/content/story/302557.html
Mike's father, Michael Powell, also played cricket, for Worcestershire Second XI in 1973.
