Michael Lonsdale, sometimes billed as Michel Lonsdale (May 24, 1931, in Paris) is an Anglo-French actor who has appeared in over 180 films and television shows.
Lonsdale was born in Paris to a French mother and an English father. He is perhaps best known for his role as the villainous Sir Hugo Drax in the 1979 James Bond film, Moonraker, or possibly the astute French detective Lebel who brought down the "Jackal" in The Day of the Jackal. Lonsdale also notably played the abbot in The Name of the Rose, a mysterious rescuer of Robert De Niro in Ronin (in which he also starred with Bond villain actors Sean Bean and Jonathan Pryce) and most recently the father of Louis in Steven Spielberg's Munich. A Frenchman of British descent, Lonsdale is perfectly bilingual and is often in demand for English-language productions.
