Meteor is a 1979 film in which scientists detect an asteroid on a collision course with Earth and struggle with international, cold war politics in their efforts to prevent disaster. The movie starred Sean Connery.
It was directed by Ronald Neame and with a screenplay by Edmund H. North and Stanley Mann, "inspired" by an MIT report Project Icarus . The movie co-starred Natalie Wood, Karl Malden, Brian Keith, Martin Landau, Trevor Howard, Henry Fonda, Johnny Yune, and Katherine DeHetre. It was one of the last and least regarded films from the 1970's disaster genre.
With universally negative reviews (it made numerous "Worst Of" lists for that year's movies), it proved an unpopular draw with audiences, losing millions. According to one biography of Natalie Wood, she and most others in the cast knew early on this film was going to be a dud, mainly due to the director and the script.
After a collision with a comet, a nearly 8km wide piece of the asteroid "Orpheus" is heading towards Earth. If it will hit it will cause a incredible catastrophe which will probably extinguish mankind. To stop the meteor NASA wants to use the illegal nuclear weapon satellite "Hercules" but discovers soon that it doesn't have enough fire power. Their only chance to save the world is to join forces with the USSR who have also launched such an illegal satellite. But will both governments agree? Written by Anonymous
