Membership Action Plan (MAP) is a term for countries that are in a stage of becoming members of NATO.
The current MAP countries are: Albania, the Republic of Macedonia (both since April 1999) and Croatia (since May 2002).
Georgia,Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and Ukraine have all expressed interest in receiving MAPs.
MAP is designed to assist aspiring partner countries meet NATO standards and prepare for possible future membership. Aspiring nations must first participate in MAP before they join the alliance. The Membership Action Plan (MAP) will remain the vehicle to keep aspirants’ progress under review.
