Megas XLR (XLR = eXtra Large Robot) is an American Anime-influenced animated television series that aired on the Toonami block on Cartoon Network and is produced by Cartoon Network Studios. It was created by Jody Schaeffer and George Krstic. Its opening song is "Megas XLR Theme (Chicks Dig Giant Robots)" by Ragtime Revolutionaries (now Deathwish Nine) (as listed in the credits).
Originally entitled Lowbrow, the pilot episode was shown during Cartoon Network's 2002 Summerfest, wherein eight original Cartoon Cartoon pilots were shown. As it was chosen as the most popular among viewers, Lowbrow was greenlit and became Megas XLR. After being delayed from its original debut in December 2003, Megas XLR finally debuted on Toonami in May 1, 2004 and was cancelled on April 26, 2005. Before and since the show being cancelled, characters have appeared in Cartoon Network's branding in both 2D and 3D CGI form. Megas XLR is now in comic form in the pages of DC Comics' Cartoon Network Action Pack, with the stories written by its co-creator George Krstic.
In the future, humanity has been beset by a horde of alien invaders. Kiva, a human soldier, has captured an alien mecha, the Megas, and remodeled it, planning to send it back in time three years to a pivotal battle so that the humans can win the war. Her plan goes awry when the Megas is fired upon in transit, rocketing it at random through time. She pursues it, as does the alien mothership. Curtain up on present day. A slob in New Jersey has discovered the Megas in a pile of garbage. Kiva, having caught up to him, is dismayed to learn that it has been remodeled, its head replaced by a classic muscle car, its controls integrated with video game controllers, making her new (and unfortunate) ally, Coop, the only one capable of piloting the Megas. She must now find a way to repair the Megas' time controller and return to the future, as well as dealing with the various challenges inherent in co-owning the Earth's most destructive piece of hardware... especially since Coop insists that it is HIS robot, and seems to be somewhat judgementally impaired. In the year 3037, an attractive young scientist named Kiva has built a mecha robot called the Megas to go back in time to change the outcome of a war started two years prior by an invading by a race of cthulhu-looking aliens called the Glorft from invading Earth. Unfortunately for Kiva, the plan backfired and her robot was sent back to 1936 where it lay abandoned in a junkyard in New Jersey until 2004 when two late twenty-something slackers named Coop and Jamie made some cool modifications to the robot such as replacing the head with a hot rod, simplified the complicated futuristic controls with a steering wheel and a Playstation joystick, replacing the manual overide with a Dance-Dance-Revolution arcade machine, and painting the blue exterior with hot rod flame decals turning the robot into the Megas XLR. Kiva finds her robot in the past and to her chagrin finds that two dimwitted boys have overhauled her robot. To make matters worse, she can't go back to her time because Coop destroyed the robots time travel device without knowing what it was. However, Kiva is impressed with Coop's ability to pilot the Megas. Ironically, Coops piloting abilities, and his big stature, was from playing hours upon hours of playing video games.
