Los Angeles Galaxy is a professional soccer club based in Los Angeles, California that is a member of the American first division, Major League Soccer (MLS). In 1995 the club became one of the original ten founding franchises of MLS. The name "Galaxy" refers to L.A. being the home of Hollywood "movie stars".
The club has won the MLS Cup twice (2002, 2005), and the US Open Cup twice (2001, 2005). L.A. plays their home matches at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California, along with arch-rival, Chivas USA.
In 2007, the Galaxy became the most famous MLS club in the world by signing English superstar, David Beckham, to a contract potentially worth $250 million over five years. In doing so, L.A. became the first MLS team to take advantage of the Designated Player Rule, also known as the "Beckham Rule."
