"The Last Song" is a single by The All-American Rejects and is the second single released from their self-titled debut album. It is notable for relying heavily on classical instruments, such as the violin and cello, which is rare in the rock genre.
"The Last Song" is a b-side from the "Thirty-Three" single by The Smashing Pumpkins. Written by Billy Corgan, it is the only b-side written entirely after the album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was completed. After contemplating holding the song for the next Smashing Pumpkins record, Corgan decided the song was so in the spirit of Mellon Collie that is should be an extra track.
The song is of particular significance because the guitar solo used in the song is played by Corgan's father, William Corgan Sr. Although the relationship between the two was often contemptuous, after the song was released the junior Corgan expressed great pride and admiration for his father's influence on his guitar playing. In February 1997, Billy Corgan summed up this influence:
Billy Corgan and his father would later play together at a benefit concert for homeless teenagers called "The First Waltz".
Upon the release of The Aeroplane Flies High box set, the song received attention from many reviewers and fans. Corgan himself considers "The Last Song" the most personally important song on The Aeroplane Flies High. Rolling Stone called the song "stately and anthemic, blessed with a delicacy and grace that is unlike anything else in the band's catalog." Despite this warm reception, the song was only played live in its entirety once, during the band's farewell show on December 2, 2000.
"The Last Song" is an X Japan single released on March 18, 1998, shortly after the band's breakup in late 1997. It comes on an enhanced CD, containing one audio track (written and composed by Yoshiki Hayashi), along with several bonus features on the data track, such as the band's disbandment statement, a full discography and a live video of "The Last Song", filmed during the band's last performance. The cover art depicts Hayashi embracing X Japan co-founder Toshimitsu Deyama during aforementioned concert, which was also released as a live album (The Last Live) and for home video (The Last Live Video).
The Last Song is the final single for the album Theory of a Deadman, by Theory of a Deadman. This song was originally going to be called "Theory of a Deadman", but they then changed it to the band's early name, "Last Song", and, in turn, changed the band's name to Theory of a Deadman.
The Last Song is the second single by Sir Elton John from the album The One. The song may be a tribute to his father who died in 1992.
There are also rumors of it being written in the memory of Ryan White, a young AIDS patient who died at age 18, with whom John was close.
"Last Song" is a single released by Gackt on November 3,2003.
