Kevin M. De Cock, MD, is a Belgian-born scientist who is a citizen of the United States. He is the director of the WHO Department of HIV/AIDS. He is an infectious disease specialist, with expertise in HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, liver disease, and tropical diseases. Before becoming director of the WHO Department of HIV/AIDS, De Cock was director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Kenya from 2000 to 2006 and Director of the CDC Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, Surveillance and Epidemiology in Atlanta, Georgia from 1997 to 2000. Commenting on recent research indicating that circumcision could cut the rate of HIV infection by 60%, De Cock said the findings were a "significant scientific advance".
