Julian Schnabel (b. 26 October 1951) is an Academy Award nominated and Golden Globe winning filmmaker and American artist.
Prior to establishing his film career, Julian Schnabel made a name for himself (throughout the 1980s) as a "neo-expressionist" artist/painter (some of his paintings involved smashed plates glued to wooden panels). His work has been exhibited at art galleries around the world, and he has been known as the "self-proclaimed lion of the New York art world".
His wife Olatz López Garmendia appeared as Reinaldo's mother in Before Night Falls (2000). Sshe also served as executive producer on the film.
Studied at the University of Houston, Texas from 1969 to 1973, where he received his B.F.A..
Did the paintings, photos and art direction for the album "By the way" (2002) by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Father of five children: Stella Schnabel, Vito Maria Schnabel and Lola Schnabel with his first wife Jacqueline; the twins Cy Schnabel and Olmo Schnabel with his present wife Olatz López Garmendia. All of his children appeared on Before Night Falls (2000).
His daughter Stella Schnabel used to date Red Hot Chili Peppers lead guitarist John Frusciante (I). They have since broken up.
Says he remains on good terms with his ex-wife Jacqueline, who lives seven blocks away from his New York home.
His college room mate was Robert Wuhl.
His first solo show at the Mary Boone Gallery in 1979 made him a new force in the neo-expressionist movement. One year later, he was invited to participate at the Venice Biennale.
Lives in New York City and has a summer home in Montauk, Long Island.
Singing in a rock band in Brownsville, Texas, when he was a teenager, he released his first album "Every Silver Lining Has a Cloud", containing country-rock songs, in 1995.
Born in Brooklyn but later moved with family to Brownsville, Texas where he grew up.
His art works are in museums throughout the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
