John Davidson (poet) (Wikipedia.org)

John Davidson (April 11, 1857 – March 23, 1909), Scottish poet and playwright, best known for his ballads.

He was born at Barrhead, East Renfrewshire as the son of a Dissenting minister and entered the chemical department of a sugar refinery in Greenock in his 13th year, returning after one year to school as a pupil teacher. He studied at the University of Edinburgh. He was afterwards engaged in teaching at various places, and having taken to literature went in 1889 to London.

He achieved a reputation as a writer of poems and plays of marked individuality and vivid realism. His poems include In a Music Hall (1891), Fleet Street Eclogues (1893), Baptist Lake (1894), New Ballads (1896), The Last Ballad (1898), The Triumph of Mammon (1907), and among his plays are Bruce (1886), Smith: a Tragic Farce (1888), Godfrida (1898). He also wrote novels. From 1901 he wrote pessimistic blank verse Testaments. He was given a Civil List pension in 1906.

Davidson disappeared on March 27, 1909, under circumstances which left little doubt that under the influence of mental depression he had drowned himself at Penzance. Among his papers was found the manuscript of a new work, Fleet Street Poems, with a letter containing the words, "This will be my last book." His body was discovered a few months later.

John Davidson (entertainer) (Wikipedia.org)

John Davidson (born to two Baptist ministers, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on December 13, 1941) is an American actor and singer, best known for hosting That's Incredible!, Time Machine, and Hollywood Squares in the 1980s, and a revival of The $100,000 Pyramid in 1991 and 1992.

Davidson was a member of the regular repertory company on the short-lived CBS variety show The Entertainers (1964-65). He was host of his own talk show, which aired daily in syndication (either 60 or 90 minutes in length) from 1980 to 1982. He made more than one hundred appearances on the original Hollywood Squares during its 1966-1981 run.

Davidson made his Broadway debut in the 1964 production of Foxy, which starred Bert Lahr. He also appeared in State Fair in 1996.

Davidson has recorded twelve albums and performed in various musicals. He acted in many movies including The Happiest Millionaire; The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band; Coffee, Tea or Me; The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders II; Airport '79; and Edward Scissorhands, as well as the sitcom The Girl with Something Extra with Sally Field. John was also a featured guest on several of the Carpenters' TV specials.

He was the scheduled headline act at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky, the night the structure burned down, killing 165 persons, on May 28, 1977. He was not injured and later participated in a charity concert to raise funds for the families of fire victims.

John Davidson has appeared in recent productions of "...Forum", "Kismet, "State Fair", & "Man of La Mancha" down at the Surflight Theatre in Long Beach Island, NJ.

John Davidson (ice hockey) (Wikipedia.org)

John Davidson (born February 27, 1953 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), is the president of hockey operations of the St. Louis Blues and a former goaltender for the St. Louis Blues (1973-75) and New York Rangers (1975-83) of the National Hockey League. He is also well-known as a long-time hockey broadcaster.

Growing up in western Canada, he played left wing until age 16, when he was moved to goaltender. Drafted fifth overall in 1973, he became the first goalie in NHL history to jump directly from major junior to the NHL. While his hockey career was fraught with many significant injuries, he is perhaps best remembered (as a player) for leading the Rangers to the 1979 Stanley Cup Finals on an injured left knee. His jersey numbers were 35, 00 and 30blank">http://www.newyorkrangers.com/tradition/ATR/bio.asp?PlayerID=324.

After retiring due to injury, he joined _MSG's hockey coverage staff in 1983, and was the color commentator for Rangers games from 1986-87 to 2005-06. Davidson, often known by the nickname "J.D.", has become one of the most prominent color analysts in sports, and his hockey insight is so well respected that he currently sits on the Hockey Hall of Fame selection committee. Long-time network TV partner Mike Emrick also sits on that committee, and the two shared the 2004 Lester Patrick Trophy for service to hockey in the U.S. hockey/main_site/main/home/04_lesterpat_announ/" target="_blank">http://edit.usahockey.com/usa_hockey/main_site/main/home/04_lesterpat_announ/

Davidson (like his former MSG booth-mates _Sam Rosen and Al Trautwig) has also contributed to NHL coverage on various national television networks (including CBC, FOX, ABC, ESPN, NBC and Versus). The following timeline is a list of all season-long hockey coverage he has done, such as in-game commentary and post-game analysis shows. It does not include special events such as the Winter Olympics or Canada Cup. Davidson was known as a broadcaster for his signature phrase of "Oh baby!". He was also featured in full motion videos shot for the EA Sports videogame NHL 97.

Davidson was named President of Hockey Operations for the Blues on June 30, 2006. He has committed to building a strong American base for the once-proud franchise.

They don't come any nicer than John Davidson. The dark-haired, Pittsburgh-born singer/TV personality, who was born in 1941 and the son of a Baptist minister, is highly defined and sometimes cursed by his clean-cut, fresh-faced, apple-cheeked handsomeness. After graduating from high school in White Plains, New York, and earning a B.A. in Theater Arts from Denison University, John took his naturally gifted baritone voice to the musical stage. The affable six-footer made his Broadway bow with Bert Lahr and Larry Blyden in the short-lived musical "Foxy" in 1964 at the Ziegfeld Theater. TV producer Bob Banner (I), who discovered such other formidable talents as Carol Burnett, Dom DeLuise and Bob Newhart, caught John in one of his performances and immediately took him under his wing. Within a short time John was moving quickly in the musical fast lane. On TV he co-starred as Matt in a 1964 Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation of the classic musical "The Fantasticks" alongside an esteemed company that included Mr. Lahr, Ricardo Montalban, Stanley Holloway and the lovely soprano Susan Watson (I). He also appeared as a regular on the "Entertainers, The" (1964), and grew in stature enough to host "Kraft Summer Music Hall, The" (1966), keeping his face and voice consistently front-and-center on the prime-time variety show circuit. Back on stage he won a Theater World Award in 1965 for his role as Curly in "Oklahoma!," a part he would play many times over the years. Demonstrating leading man potential, John was handed tuneful co-star assignments in the rather antiseptic Disney movies Happiest Millionaire, The (1967) and One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, The (1968), both featuring the reigning Cinderella of the time Lesley Ann Warren, but he did not move ahead in films. While an overly cute, lightweight image severely hampered his chances to be taken seriously as a dramatic actor, the bedimpled performer nevertheless made great strides as a full-fledged TV presence in the 1970s. He earned his own daytime talk show "John Davidson Show, The" (1969) and appeared in such mini-movie offerings as Coffee, Tea or Me? (1973) (TV) with Karen Valentine (I). He co-starred with another eternal cutie at the time, Sally Field, in "Girl with Something Extra, The" (1973) playing newlyweds, but the sitcom was unsuccessful. Through the lean years John maintained by singing on his own TV Christmas specials and guesting in episodes of "The Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island." Interest in John, however, slacked off. It wasn't until the next decade when his career revitalized by hosting "That's Incredible!" (1980). The show's format fit John's buoyant nature to a tee and lasted four years alongside co-host Cathy Lee Crosby. His talent for self-effacing "straight man" humor showed up first as a "Hollywood Squares" regular, then as takeover host of "New Hollywood Squares, The" (1986) which lasted several years. He also took over Dick Clark (I)'s emcee post on the syndicated game show "$10,000 Pyramid, The" (1973) during the 1992-1993 season. Music, however, has always been John's first passion. In addition to recording 12 solo albums in both the pop and country music venues, he plays the guitar and banjo and has sung in English, French and Spanish. A perennial nightclub and concert favorite, he has starred in many national tours and stock productions including "The Music Man," "110 in the Shade," "Paint Your Wagon," "Li'l Abner," "Camelot," "Carousel," "I Do! I Do!" and "Will Rogers' Follies," among others. He's appeared in legit plays, including the off-Broadway comedy "High Infidelity" opposite both Barbara Eden (I) and Morgan Fairchild, and in 1996 returned to Broadway after 32 years in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "State Fair." Two years later he was inspired to try out his one-man show "Bully" as Theodore Roosevelt after playing the president earlier in the musical "Teddy and Alice." John has made sporadic appearances in films including the disaster epic _Concorde: Airport '79, The (1979)_ and Edward Scissorhands (1990). Divorced in 1982 from singer Jackie Miller (I), who once was part of the folk duo Jackie and Gayle, after 13 years of marriage and two children, John is currently with second wife and former backup singer Rhonda Rivera (since 1983). Together they have a child of their own. Most recently he appeared with one of his children, Ashleigh, in a 2005 musical production of "Shenandoah."
