John Daniel Singleton (born January 6, 1968 in Los Angeles, California) is an American Academy Award-nominated film director, screenwriter, and producer. His movies depict his native South Los Angeles with both its sweet and violent sides given equal consideration.

Singleton attended Pasadena City College and the University of Southern California, where he was initiated into Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.

He has received many distinctions, beginning during his time as an undergraduate screenwriter at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, including nominations for Best Screenplay and Director for Boyz N the Hood, and the s USC School of Cinematic Arts's prestigious Mary Pickford Alumni Awardblank">http://cinema.usc.edu/summer/resources/newsDetail.cfm?cid=6236 in 2006.

With his ex-wife, Ghanaian princess and actress _Akosua Cyamama Busia (married October 12, 1996 - June 15, 1997), he had one daughter (Hadar) (born April 13, 1997)

His daughter Cleopatra was in Baby Boy.

He is the youngest person ever nominated for Best Director at the 1991 Academy Awards for Boyz N the Hood and the first (and, to date, the only) African-American to be nominated for the award.

John Singleton is also the music video director of Michael Jackson's hit single Remember The Time, starring actor Eddie Murphy.

On August 23, 2007, Singleton was involved in an automobile accident, in which he struck and killed a pedestrian, who was identified as Constance Russell, 57, of Los Angeleshttp://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,294534,00.html. Staying on the scene until police arrived, Singleton was not found to be under the influence of alcohol or other substances, and was released after being questioned. John Singleton AM is an Australian entrepreneur. He was born in Sydney in 1942 and educated at Fort Street High School, New South Wales.

Singleton, known as "Singo", commenced a career in advertising in the 1960s before founding with others the Sydney agency Strauss, Palmer and Singleton, McAllan (SPASM) which was later sold to the US Doyle Dane Bernbach network in the early 1970s. After leaving that network Singleton started up again on his own with "John Singleton Advertising" in the 1980s. This agency listed publicy and grew to become the STW Group Ltd which now owns over 50 Australian marketing and advertising businesses including the Singleton Ogilvy & Mather ad agency and an interest in J Walter Thompson's Australian operations.

Today Singleton is listed in Business Review Weekly's Rich 200 list, and his investments range from radio (being the majority shareholder in the Macquarie Radio Network, which comprises radio stations 2CH and 2GB ), horse-racing training and publishing.

He is well known as a larrikin in Australia for his love of good times, evident in him buying drinks for the entire Rosehill racecourse in Sydney after his horse won the prestigious Golden Slipper.

He was Executive Creative Director on the Qantas commercials featuring a children's choir singing I Still Call Australia Home all over the globe; famously Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon called Singleton on Christmas Day 1997 to propose the idea having seen the choir on Carols by Candlelight the night before.

Singleton is also firm friends with his radio employees Alan Jones and Ray Hadley. Probably his most famous connection was with Robert Harley (aka 'The Rock').

He was also responsible for bringing Paris Hilton into Sydney for New Year's Eve in 2006 to promote the new low-carb beer 'Bondi Blonde'.

Singleton owns a property in Mount White (about 40 minutes from the CBD) where he lives most of the time with his wife. he enjoys living in the area although does nt attend social events with the rest of the community as he is always busy training his race horses.

Singleton has had six wives, including international model Maggi Eckardt (#2), Miss World Belinda Green (#3) and television presenter Liz Hayes (#4).

Son of mortgage broker Danny Singleton and pharmaceutical company sales executive Sheila Ward and raised in separate households by his unmarried parents, John Singleton (I) attended the Filmic Writing Program at USC after graduating from high school in 1986. While studying there, he won three writing awards from the university, which lead to a contract with Creative Artists Agency during his sophomore year. Columbia Pictures bought his script for Boyz n the Hood (1991) and budgeted it at $7 million. Singleton notes that much of the story comes from his own experiences in South Central LA and credits his parents with keeping him off the street.
