John Russell (painter) (Wikipedia.org)

John Russell (March 29, 1745 – April 20, 1806) was an English painter renowned for his portrait work in oils and pastels, and as a writer and teacher of painting techniques.

Born in Guildford, Surrey Guildford- A Residential Centre. The official Guide of the Corporation of Guildford. 11th Ed. 1946 , he trained under the tutelage of Francis Cotes RA, one of the pioneers of English pastel painting, and – like Cotes – became an admirer of the pastel drawings of Rosalba Carriera.

Russell set up his own studio in 1767. Although nominally based in London, Russell travelled extensively around Britain, undertaking portraits. His pastels technique prompted him to write Elements of Painting with Crayons, published in 1772, by which time he had won premiums for his drawings from the Society of Arts in 1759 and 1760 and entered the Royal Academy school of art in 1770, winning its gold medal for figure drawing the same year. He exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1768 and exhibited 330 works at the Academy from 1769 until his death, being elected a full Academician in 1788.

In 1789, Russell was commissioned to paint a portrait of the royal physician Francis Willis. The results obviously pleased the monarch as, in 1790, Russell was appointed Crayon [pastel] Painter to King George III, Queen Charlotte, the Prince of Wales (both of whom Russell also painted) and the Duke of York. With such royal patronage, he developed a large and fashionable clientele.

His portraits were engraved by Collyer, Turner, Heath, Dean, Bartolozzi, Trotter and other prominent engravers.

A man of deep religious beliefs (a devout follower of George Whitefield), Russell was also interested in astronomy (he was a friend of Sir William Herschel) and in mathematics, inventing a scientific apparatus used to exhibit an accurate map of the moon he painted in 1795.

Unfortunately, he was troubled by ill-health for much of his life and in 1803, became almost deaf following a bout of cholera. He died in Hull in 1806 after contracting typhus.

His son, William Russell (1780-1870) was also a successful painter.

John Russell (actor) (Wikipedia.org)

John Russell (January 3, 1921 – January 19, 1991) was an American actor most noted for playing Marshal Dan Troop in the western television series Lawman from 1958 to 1962.

Born John Lawrence Russell in Los Angeles, California, he fit the Hollywood image of tall, dark, and handsome. He attended the University of California as a student athlete. Following the outbreak of World War II, he joined the United States Marines, received a battlefield commission as lieutenant at Guadalcanal, and returned home after the war, a highly decorated veteran.

He was discovered by a talent agent while in a Beverly Hills restaurant and made his film debut in 1945. Russell was contracted to 20th Century Fox in several supporting roles, and later was signed with Republic Pictures. He primarily played secondary roles, often in western films, but in 1952 starred opposite Judy Canova in Oklahoma Annie. In 1955 Russell was given the lead role in a television drama called "Soldiers of Fortune." The half-hour adventure show placed him and his sidekick, played by Chick Chandler, in a dangerous jungle setting. While the show proved popular with young boys, it did not draw enough adult viewers to its prime slot and was canceled in 1957.

A year later, Russell was cast in his most memorable role as Marshal Dan Troop, the lead character in Lawman, an ABC western series that ran for five years. Co-starring with Peter Brown, who played Deputy Johnny McKay, Russell played a U.S. frontier peace officer mentoring his younger compatriot.

Russell appeared in other motion pictures, notably as a supporting player in the Howard Hawks 1959 western, Rio Bravo, which starred John Wayne, Dean Martin, and Walter Brennan. Through the 1960s to the 1980s, he returned to secondary roles, appearing in more than twenty films including three directed by his friend Clint Eastwood.

Russell appeared in the second season of the Filmation children's science fiction series Jason of Star Command. He played the role of Commander Stone, a blue skinned alien from Alpha Centauri. He replaced James Doohan who played the Commander in the previous season but left to start working on Star Trek The Motion Picture.

John Russell died from emphysema in 1991 and was interred in the Los Angeles National Cemetery, a former U.S. Veterans Administration cemetery in Los Angeles, California.

John Russell (clergyman) (Wikipedia.org)

John Russell (1626 - December 10, 1692) was a Puritan minister in Hadley, Massachusetts during King Philip's War. As such, he is part of the Angel of Hadley legend.

John Russell graduated from Harvard in 1645. In 1650 he succeeded Henry Smith as the minister at Wethersfield, Connecticut. Seven years later controversy erupted over church membership, discipline, and baptism, with the church in neighboring Hartford being inclined toward Presbyterianism as opposed to Congregationalism. The Congregationalist minority in Hartford attempted to join Russell's church in Wethersfield; when the General Court prevented the move pending efforts at reconciliation, the controversy spilled over into Russell's congregation. Finally, on April 18, 1659, the majority of Russell's congregation signed an agreement to depart from Connecticut for Massachusetts.

In 1659 Russell led the dissenting Connecticut congregation that founded the town of Hadley on the east bank at a bend of the Connecticut River. Beginning in 1664, he sheltered the regicides Edward Whalley and William Goffe in his home. Whalley died about 1675. Goffe was still alive during King Philip's War when, according to the Angel of Hadley legend, he allegedly came out of hiding to rally the townspeople during an attack before disappearing again.
