John Pickard (April 27 1824 - December 17 1883) was a New Brunswick businessman and political figure. He represented York in the Canadian House of Commons as an Independent Liberal from 1868 to 1883.
He was born in Douglas, New Brunswick in 1824 and began work with his father there. He later established himself as a merchant in Fredericton and a lumber merchant in York County. In partnership with Thomas Temple, he owned and operated a sawmill at Fredericton. He helped found the People's Bank of New Brunswick in 1864 and a director of the New Brunswick Railway. In 1865, he ran against Charles Fisher in York as an opponent of Confederation and was defeated. He was elected to represent York in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in an 1867 by-election after Fisher ran for a seat in the House of Commons. When Fisher was appointed judge, Pickard was elected to the federal parliament in an 1868 by-election. He supported Alexander Mackenzie during Mackenzie's term as prime minister.
He died in Fredericton in 1883.
John Pickard (June 25, 1913 - August 4, 1993) appeared in numerous movies throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He tried out for the role of Matt Dillon in the new "Gunsmoke" series (1955) and had it almost locked up before flubbing a romantic scene with Amanda Blake. "Gunsmoke" producer Charles Marquis Warren later said Pickard never knew how close he came to immortality. May be the only actor to be on both ends of the whip when he was whipped in "Hellgate" (1952) and did the whipping in "Badlands of Montana" (1957)
He was killed at a family picnic by a bull who had gotten loose.
John Pickard (born 11 September, 1963), is a British classical composer.
Pickard was born in Burnley, Lancashire, England. He studied music and composition at the University of Wales, under Welsh composer William Mathias, and later in The Netherlands under Louis Andriessen. Since 1993 he has been Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Bristol. John Pickard is also conductor of the University of Bristol Symphony Orchestra.
Pickard has composed a number of critically well-received orchestral and instrumental works, among them four symphonies and a number of symphonic works (including perhaps his best-known piece, The Flight of Icarus, which San Francisco Chronicle called a translucent and achingly lovely memorial to the fallen Icarus… a serious contender for the most exciting musical premiere of 2006. In addition he has composed a Piano Concerto, a Trombone Concerto The Spindle of Necessity, recorded by Christian Lindberg and four string quartets. The Strad opined that the fourth quartet was one of the best pieces of British chamber music to be heard for years, while Tempo, reviewing a recording of all four quartets offered the opinion that “ if Pickard were never to write another quartet in his life, his place among the greats is secure”.
John Pickard is also the General Editor of the Elgar Complete Edition.
John Pickard (born 2 November, 1977) is a British actor who currently appears in Channel 4's Hollyoaks playing Dominic Reilly. He is the brother of fellow Hollyoaks star Nick Pickard, who plays Tony Hutchinson in the soap. He also had a leading role in the 1990s sitcom 2point4 Children playing David Porter and from 1993-1996 he played the role of Kevin the sidekick of Robbie Jackson (Dean Gaffney), in BBC's EastEnders.
