Superintendent John May was the first commander of the Metropolitan Police A Division, which policed the Whitehall area of London. Since the divisional station house was adjacent to the offices of the Joint Commissioners, Charles Rowan and Richard Mayne, May began to serve as unofficial second-in-command of the force, providing a link between the Commissioners and their men.
John May (born 15 April 1878 in Lanarkshire) was a Scottish footballer.
He played on the wing and started his career at Paisley FC. He played for a couple more clubs before he signed for Derby County. Whilst there he played in two losing FA Cup finals.
He joined Rangers in May 1904 and went on to play 149 times and scored 16 goals before he moved on to Greenock Morton in 1910.
May also won 5 Scotland caps between 1906 and 1909.
John May was an English shipwright. In 1727 the Amsterdam Admiralty, the largest of the six Dutch Chambers that made up the Dutch East India Company, brought in May, Charles Bentham and Thomas Davis to work for them in improving ship design and avoiding the wreck after wreck they had recently been suffering.
