John Holmes (actor) (Wikipedia.org)

John Curtis Holmes (August 8, 1944 – March 13, 1988) better known as John C. Holmes or Johnny Wadd (after the lead character in a series of related films), was one of the most famous male adult film stars of all time, appearing in about 2,500 adult loops, stag films, and porno feature movies in the 1970s and 1980s, including at least one gay feature film and a handful of gay loops. He was best known for his exceptionally large penis, which was heavily promoted as being the longest in the porn industry; however, its exact dimensions are unknown. Holmes also attracted notoriety for his involvement in the brutal Wonderland Murders in 1981, and for his death from AIDS.

Holmes was the subject of a long article in Rolling Stone magazine in 1989 and a feature length documentary, and the inspiration for two Hollywood movies (Boogie Nights and Wonderland).

Additionally he has been the subject of numerous biographical films and documentaries, such as Exhausted: John C. Holmes, the Real Story, Wadd: The Life and Times of John C. Holmes, "John Holmes, Superstar", "John Holmes: The Man, The Myth, The Legend", and "XXXL: The John Holmes Story".

John Holmes (U.S. politician) (Wikipedia.org)

John Holmes (March 14, 1773—July 7, 1843) was an American politician. Holmes, a National Republican, served as a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts and was one of the first two U.S. Senators from Maine. Holmes was noted for his involvement in the Treaty of Ghent.

Holmes was born in Kingston, Massachusetts. He attended public schools in Kingston and in 1796 graduated from Rhode Island College (now Brown University) in Providence, Rhode Island. Later, Holmes studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1799, opening a law practice in Alfred, Maine — then a district of Massachusetts. At this time, he was also engaged in literary pursuits.

The political career of Holmes began when he was elected to the Massachusetts General Court in 1802, 1803, and 1812, and was subsequently elected to the Massachusetts State Senate in 1813 and 1814. In 1816, Holmes was one of the commissioners under the Treaty of Ghent to divide the islands of Passamaquoddy Bay between the United States and Great Britain. He was also appointed by the legislature to organize state prisons and revise the Massachusetts criminal code.

Holmes was elected as a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts in 1816, serving from March 4, 1817, to his resignation on March 15, 1820. During the 16th Congress, Holmes served as chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of State. Holmes was a backer of William H. Crawford (a "Crawford Republican") and John Quincy Adams, and was opposed to Andrew Jackson (an "Anti-Jackson").

Holmes was later a delegate to the Maine Constitutional Convention. Upon separation from Massachusetts and the admission of the Maine as a state, he was elected to the U.S. Senate and served from June 13, 1820, to March 3, 1827. Holmes was again elected to the Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Albion K. Parris, serving from January 15, 1829, to March 3, 1833. During the 17th Congress, Holmes served as chairman of the Committee on Finance (1821-1822); during the 21st Congress, Holmes was chairman of the Committee on Pensions.

After leaving the U.S. Senate, Holmes resumed his law practice. From 1836 to 1837, he was a member of the Maine House of Representatives. In 1841, Holmes was appointed as the United States Attorney for the District of Maine, a post he held until his death in Portland on July 7, 1843. Holmes was interred in a private tomb of Cotton Brooks, Eastern Cemetery.

In 1840, Holmes published The Statesman, Or Principles of Legislation and Law, a law book, now a collectors' item worth approximately $150.

John Holmes (I) (imdb.com)

Born John Curtis Estes on August 8, 1944 in rural Pickaway County, Ohio. John was raised by a religious fanatic mother, named Mary, and an abusive alcoholic stepfather, named Harold. He was a bible student, but at the age of 16 he left home and went through a stint in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in West Germany for three years. He moved to Los Angeles in 1964 where he married and worked odd jobs from a taxi driver, limo driver, and ambulance driver. Before long, he gravitated to porno films. A female neighbor was making porno loops and advised John he could make good money. Unfortunately his first check bounced and after that he always insisted on payment in cash. With his tall, slim build with curly light brown hair, a light mustache, and bright blue eyes which made him an instant recognizable man, John was not lacking for work, bringing not only a professional attitude but also his legendary endowment (12 5/8" long according to a Screw Magazine interview while other conflicting stories put it at 13 1/2" long). His enormously long 'member' got him starring roles in over 2,000 loops, stag films, and adult features in a career that spanned nearly 20 years (with a peak of a $3,000-a-day salary). His lucrative off-screen penis-for-hire business took him around the world. His most famous character is probably Johnny Wadd, a lusty, always on-the-make detective he played in several crude porno films like 'China Cat' (1978), 'Liquid Lips' (1976), and 'Blond Fire' (1978), which is considered the best of the so-called 'Wadd Films'. Better still were the big-budgeted pictures that co-starred some of the adult film industry's top leading ladies including Marilyn Chambers (I), Seka, Annette Haven, and even a young, underage Traci Lords (I). In late 1970s, John fell victim to drug abuse which prevented him from performing in the on-screen sex, making him drop out of the adult film business. By late 1980, John was broke with all of his millions spent on drugs which he never fully got over his addition. He made money by robbing peoples houses and cars, as well as delivering drugs for the local gangsters. The lowest point in his life was when he was implicated in grisly, drug-related murders on July 1, 1981. He was allegedly present at the drug-related torture and murders of William Deverell, Ronald Launius, Joy Miller, and Barbara Richardson by a gang of unknown henchmen sent by a powerful gangster, named Eddie Nash. A fifth victim, Susan Launius (Ronald Launius's estranged wife), barely survived the attack and had no memory of the event. The bloody crime made lurid headlines throughout southern California and became known as The Wonderland Murders, named after the street in the wooded Laurel Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles where the killings took place. John refused to tell the police what he knew and went on the run for nearly six months before he was taken into custody. The authorities, angered by John's refusal to co-operate with the investigation, put him on trial for all four murders. After a three-month, semi-public trial, John was finally acquitted on June 26, 1982. Although found not guilty of the murders, he remained in jail for burglary and contempt-of-court charges until his release in November 1982. The true nature and details of the Laurel Canyon murders remains unsolved to this day. After his release from prison, John Holms tried to clean up his act and continue his porno career with a new generation of porno stars. But his drug addiction continued off-and-on and although the work in the porno business was still plentiful, it was no longer lucrative. Later in 1985, John was diagnosed with AIDS in 1985. He continued working until around 1987 which his increasingly gaunt physical appearance began to give away the true nature of his health. John died at the veteran's Administration Hospital at Sepulveda, California on March 13, 1988 of AIDS-related complications at age 43, with his second wife at his side, former porn star Misty Dawn (I). John once estimated he'd had sex with over 14,000 women (on and off screen), and was truly a porn legend. His life was used as the basis for the film Boogie Nights (1997) and he was portrayed by Val Kilmer in the film _Wonderland (2003/I)_ , but the conflicting truth about his life, as always, was stranger than fiction.
