John Dehner (November 23, 1915 - February 4, 1992) was an American actor in radio, television and films, playing countless roles, often as a droll villain. Between 1941 and 1988, he appeared in over 260 films and TV shows.
Unlike many actors, John Dehner's career didn't begin on the stage or on radio. He started out as an animator for Walt Disney Studios, then worked as a disc jockey and a professional pianist. He made his film debut in 1945, and has appeared in dozens of films. A tall and distinguished looking man with a rich voice and somewhat flamboyant demeanor, Dehner often was cast as an outlaw leader, crooked banker or saloon owner in westerns and adventure films, although he was occasionally cast against type in comedies, and played a crusading newspaper reporter in the TV series "Roaring 20's, The" (1960).
Regularly cast as the "bad guy" on the radio version of "Gunsmoke", Western fans later came to know Dehner as "Paladin" on radio's "Have Gun, Will Travel". After radio, on television, he often recreated the role of the polished, dishonest gambler or tough gunman hunted by the law. While he was the first choice of TV producers for the TV version of "Have Gun - Will Travel" (1957), his contract at Warner Bros kept him in "Roaring 20's, The" (1960). His baritone voice was remarkably unique and recognizable in whatever role he played on screen, radio or TV.
