John Barry, OBE (born John Barry Prendergast on 3 November 1933 in York, England) is a renowned Golden Globe and five-time Academy Award-winning English film score composer.
John Barry VC (February 1, 1873 - January 8, 1901) born St Mary's parish, Kilkenny, Ireland, and was by birth an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He was 27 years old, and a private in the 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment, British Army during the South African War (Boer War, 1899-1902) when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 7/8 January 1901 at Monument Hill, South Africa, during a night attack, Private Barry, although wounded and threatened by the enemy, smashed the breach of the Maxim gun thus rendering it useless to its captors. It was while doing this gallant act that he met his death.
John Barry (1935 – June 1, 1979) was an influential British production designer.
Barry was born in London. He was described by Richard Donner as a “genius” and best known for his work on fantasy films.
Amongst his credits are A Clockwork Orange, Star Wars, and the first two Superman films. The polished surfaces of the Death Star and the crystalline Krypton in these two films are the clearest expressions of Barry's personal style.
Following these box office hits Barry was given the chance to direct his own project, the science fiction film Saturn 3. During the filming Barry fell out with the movie's star Kirk Douglas and was replaced by Stanley Donen. However, he was soon snapped up by George Lucas as a second unit director on The Empire Strikes Back. Two weeks into filming, he collapsed on set, and died shortly afterwards of meningitis.
John Barry (1745 – 13 September, 1803) was an officer in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War and later in the United States Navy. Barry was born in Tacumshane, County Wexford, Ireland and appointed a Captain in the Continental Navy 7 December 1775.
John Barry is one of two co-chairs of the Green Party in Northern Ireland, which is a regional council of the all island Green Party formed in December 2006.
Barry studied at University College Dublin and the University of Glasgow before becoming a lecturer at Keele University. In 2000, he moved to work at Queen's University Belfast. He stood unsuccessfully in _North Down at the Northern Ireland Assembly election, 2003. He also stood in the Holywood ward for the local elections in 2005 and narrowly missed being elected.
Barry is was Acting Director of the Institute of Governance, Public Policy and Social Research at Queen's University Belfast and is Reader in Politics in the School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy.
From January 2007 to June 2007 Barry was the "Benedict Distinguished Visiting Professor of Political Science" at Carleton College in Northfield, MN.
He has written many books and academic articles on sustainable development, environmental policy and the economics of sustainability. He is co-editor of two academic journals, Environmental Politics and Ecopolitics Online.
