Joey Castillo (born March 30, 1966, in Gardena, CA) is an American drummer currently playing with Queens of the Stone Age. He joined the band in 2002 after the departure of Dave Grohl. A native of southern California, Castillo began playing drums at age fifteen, influenced by War, Al Green, Led Zeppelin, and Black Flag. Prior to joining QotSA, he had been a drummer for eight years with Danzig, preceded by stints with Wasted Youth, Sugartooth, and the Mark Lanegan Band. Castillo joined Queens of the Stone Age without an audition, playing through half a song at an informal rehearsal before frontman Josh Homme walked out of the room, returned saying "I just fired the drummer. The tour starts tomorrow," and offered Castillo the gig. Castillo also played on Eagles of Death Metal's second album Death by Sexy.
Castillo uses an LP jam block. The penetrating tone of the jam block appears solo at the outset of the Queens of the Stone Age single "Little Sister" from the album Lullabies to Paralyze, Castillo’s first studio album with the band. Castillo uses Vic Firth drum sticks, DW drums, pedals and hardware and has recently switched from using Paiste cymbals to Zildjian cymbals.
