Joe Estevez was born on 13 February 1950 in Dayton, Ohio. He is the younger brother of actor Martin Sheen and the uncle of Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Renée Estevez and Ramón Estevez Jr.
As a child, Estevez lived on Brown Street in the South Park neighborhood of Dayton, Ohio. He is one of 10 children, nine boys and one girl, born to a Catholic, Spanish-born father, Francisco Estevez, and an Irish mother, Mary Anne Phelan.
Estevez attended Chaminade High School, a Catholic High School located in Dayton, Ohio. Upon his graduation, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy.
At the point Estevez began pursuing his acting career, he initially used the name Joe Phelan. Phelan is his mother's maiden name. He eventually returned to using his given name, Estevez.
