The ITV Evening News is the early evening news programme on the British television network ITV. It is produced by ITN.
It is a thirty minute broadcast covering national (UK) and international news, beginning at 6.30pm each weekday. From Mondays to Thursdays, the programme is anchored by Mark Austin and Mary Nightingale. The broadcast is presented by various newsreaders on a Friday, and when Mark and Mary are not available.
When there is a major news story, one presenter will host the first ten or fifteen minutes of the programme from the scene of the story. The other presenter will remain in the studio and present the rest of the programme.
The ITV Evening News was introduced into the ITV Network's schedule in 1999, to replace the ITN Early Evening News. Previously, the ITN News at 5:45, introduced in 1976 and presented mainly by Michael Nicholson, had been ITN's flagship evening news bulletin. In 1987, the introduction of the ITV National Weather Forecast led to the bulletin being extended in length from 15 to 20 minutes and the title changed to the ITN News At 5:40, with Alastair Stewart replacing Nicholson as the main anchor. Due to the Gulf Crisis and subsequent war in 1991, ITN were temporarily granted a full half-hour slot each evening; the continual change of time (and length) of the bulletin around this time led to the 5:40 being re-branded as the ITN Early Evening News with John Suchet as the main host, although in 1992 the bulletin went back to its 5.40pm timeslot until it was cancelled in 1999.
ITN Evening News was launched with Sir Trevor McDonald as its main presenter. He left to present the revived, and short-lived News at Ten in 2001, and subsequently became main presenter on the News at 10.30.
The Evening News is currently the RTS news programme of the year.
