I Am is Killing Heidi's seventh song released and the first single from their 2004 self-titled album Killing Heidi. Upon its release to radio, I Am was, according to record company Sony BMG, the "fastest addition ever to radio by an Australian band". With loud, roaring guitars and moody vocals, the track embodied the band's new, pared-back musical style; indeed, the song sounded so different to the band's earlier work that many people, fans and critics alike, were surprised that this was the same band who had, five years earlier, delivered songs like Weir and Mascara.
I Am became an instant hit upon its release in July 2004, debuting at #16 on the official ARIA charts and remaining in the top 50 for almost three months, eventually selling over 35,000 copies and thus achieving Gold status. It was the first time Killing Heidi had been in the charts since 2002's "Present" album, and the song served to introduce to the public the band's new image, both musically and physically.
Additionally, "I Am" was also featured on the Australia/New Zealand soundtrack of the 2004 film Spiderman 2.
"I Am" is a pop rock song written by Diane Warren, and produced by John Shanks for Hilary Duff's third album, Hilary Duff (2004). Jeff Rothschild and Shanks mixed the song, and it was one of several tracks on the album made available to request on Radio Disney in the United States. It is an empowerment song in which Duff lists positive and negative aspects about herself; she has said it is about being comfortable "with all those feelings ... being who you are". During Duff's performances of the song on her concert tour in early 2006, images of victims of the tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake were shown.
German band Die Happy covered the song for their 2005 album Bitter to Better. Their version was released as a single in late 2005 (see 2005 in music), and it reached number seventy-five on the Germany singles chart, remaining on it for six weeks.
"I Am" was the most critcially acclaimed song from Kid Rock's self titled release. It was the 4th single from the album and with no music video it peaked at No 28 on the mainstream rock charts. The song theme was taking pride in where you came from especially after 9/11. The song is very similar to Lynyrd Skynyrd's "All I Can Do Is Write About It". It was co written by radio dj Arthur "Big Daddy" Pinhallow from WRIF Detroit, and a local artist from Detroit,Huck Johns.
