I've Got a Secret (Wikipedia.org)

I've Got a Secret is a weekly panel game show, produced by Mark Goodson and Bill Todman for CBS television. Created by comedy writers Allan Sherman and Howard Merrill, it was a derivative of Goodson-Todman's own panel show What's My Line?. The original version of the show premiered in June 19, 1952, and ran until April 3, 1967. This version began broadcasting in black and white and switched to a color format in 1966, by which time virtually all commercial network programs were being shown in color.

The show was revived for the 1972-1973 season in once-a-week syndication and again from June 15 to July 6, 1976 for a summer run. Another production ran on the Oxygen cable channel in a daily version, with original episodes airing from 2000 through 2003.

GSN premiered a new version on April 17, 2006, with an all-gay panel. In October 2006 GSN opted not to renew the show for a second season, although reruns of the show remained on GSN's schedule for some time afterwards.

Oxygen Network-revival of the classic celebrity panel game show, whose main differences (including host Miller's stand-up routine and the living room-esque set) complemented a game that remained faithful to the classic CBS game. As before, panelists tried to identify a contestant's (or group of contestants') secret, whispered in Miller's ear and announced to the television and in-studio audience. Each panelist had one 30-second period to ask the contestant(s) questions in an attempt to guess the secret; for each celebrity who cannot guess the secret within their own questioning period, the contestant(s) was/were paid $200, or $1,000 if all four could not guess the secret. The contestant(s) usually got to demonstrate the skill or show a video associated with the secret. During the final segment of each show, a celebrity guest would announce his/her own secret, usually associated with a specific skill or talent. This version of "Secret" represented one of veteran host Steve Allen's last television appearances; he was guest host during one of Miller's absences in 2000. Written by Brian Rathjen

Following the successful revivals of its celebrity panel-type game shows, Goodson-Todman produced a new weekly version of another of its successful panel shows, "I've Got a Secret." As with its CBS predecessor, this weekly version saw a four-member celebrity panel try to guess a contestant's (or group of contestants') secret; the secret, which was whispered in host Allen's ear, also was announced to the television and in-studio audience. Each panelist had one 30-second period to ask the contestant(s) questions in an attempt to guess the secret; for each celebrity who cannot guess the secret within their own questioning period, the contestant(s) was/were paid $20, up to a maximum of $80 if all four could not guess the secret. The contestant(s) usually got to demonstrate the skill or show a film clip associated with the secret. During the final segment of each show, a celebrity guest would announce his/her own secret, usually associated with a specific skill or talent. Written by Brian Rathjen

"I've Got a Secret" debuted on the heels of the successful "What's My Line?" Though "Secret" had somewhat similar rules, there were other elements that gave the show its own distinctive flavor. As with "Line," four celebrity panelists try to guess an unknown-to-them secret, which the contestant (or sometimes group of contestants) whispered in the host's ear; the secret was always shown to the television and studio audience. Each panelist has one 30-second period to ask questions that will help them try to guess the secret; if a panelist fails to guess the secret before the buzzer sounds, the contestant(s) receive(s) $20 and the next panelist gets a turn. The process repeats until either the secret is guessed or if all four panelists are unable to guess the secret, meaning the contestant receives the maximum payout of $80 (during the early years, each panelist had two questioning periods, with $10 paid per unsuccessful try). Usually, a skit or demonstration of the secret followed each story. During the final segment of the show, a celebrity guest revealed his/her own secret, each followed by a segment, in which the panelists participated. Like "What's My Line," "Secret" had millions of faithful viewers during its CBS run, and spawned a number of revivals (including a weekly syndicated series in 1972 and a 2000 revival on the Oxygen network). Reruns of the CBS series currently air as part of Game Show Network's Black and White Overnight programming block. Written by Brian Rathjen

The format for "I've Got a Secret" was both simple and durable. Four panelists took turns questioning the person with the secret to determine exactly what the secret was. A nominal financial award was given to a contestant whose secret (flashed on the TV screen for the viewing audience) could not be guessed by the panel. Each show gave three regular contestants an opportunity to stump the panel, and also had one celebrity guest with his own secret to hide. Written by Anonymous
