"I'm Shipping Up To Boston" is a song with lyrics written by the folk singer Woody Guthrie and music written and performed by the Celtic Punk band Dropkick Murphys . It appeared on their 2005 album, The Warrior's Code and in the soundtrack of the Academy Award-winning Best Picture The Departed. The music video also features clips from The Departed. An earlier recording of it can be found on the Hellcat Records compilation Give 'Em the Boot Vol. 4
The Boston Red Sox played the song when closer Jonathan Papelbon entered the game during the 2007 season and while throwing warm up pitches during home games at Fenway Park . He recently danced a jig to the song, first when the Red Sox clinched the American League East title, and then when the Red Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians to clinch a World Series berth. He and the band performed the song several times during the Sox' Championship "Rolling Rally" Parade.
The Boston University Terriers pep band plays the song before the beginning of each period during ice hockey games. It is also the music for the team's opening montage. It is part of the Northeastern University men's ice hockey team's opening montage (on PA system and bagpipes), as well. In a similar move, the Boston College Eagles feature the song during their home football games, playing it before the game (on the PA system) and during the game (marching band), although Boston College is, in fact, located in Newton, Massachusetts, not Boston.
The Boston Celtics began using this song after home victories in 2007. When the team is up considerably in the closing seconds they begin the song before the game is over.
Several NHL teams use this song to signal an oncoming powerplay. Among these teams are the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers. As of January 9th 2008, the Boston Bruins played this song in the beginning of each period.
MMA fighter and current UFC light heavyweight contender Forrest Griffin used this song as his entrance music at UFC 72 Victory from the Odyssey Arena Belfast, Northern Ireland on Saturday June 16th. He now regularly uses it as his ring walk music
Derry's middleweight boxer John Duddy used it as his walk in music against Howard Eastman on the 8th December 2007 at the Kings Hall Belfast
On December 29, 2007, the song was used during the telecast of the game that marked the New England Patriots' perfect 16-0 regular season when they faced the New York Giants.
It has reached #36 on the most downloaded songs on iTunes.
The song was just recently featured on an episode of The Simpsons, entitled The Debarted, an obvious spoof on the The Departed itself. The episode aired on March 2nd, 2008.
