Holmes Herbert (30 July, 1882 - 26 December, 1956), was a British film character actor. He appeared in 228 films between 1915 and 1952. He was probably best known for his role as Dr. Jekyll's friend Dr. Lanyon in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931).
He was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England, and died in Hollywood, California. Because he was Sherlock Holmes buff, he changed his first name to Holmes.
Tall, intense English actor who made his first films after coming to America. He began in silent movies as a leading man but eventually was relegated to less important roles as a character actor as sound films began. He played in several of the Universal cycle of Sherlock Holmes movies, the title character of which was the initial inspiration for his stage name.
