Hialeah is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 226,419. As of 2004, the population estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau is 224,522, making it the fifth largest city in the state. Hialeah is part of the Miami metropolitan area and the Greater South Florida metropolitan area.
The city's name is most commonly attributed to Muskogee origin, "Haiyakpo" (prairie) and "hili" (pretty) combining in "Hialeah" to mean "pretty prairie". Alternatively, the word is of Seminole origin meaning "Upland Prairie". The city is located upon a large prairie between Biscayne Bay and the Everglades.
Hialeah is a large city with a well established cultural character. A diverse population from all over Latin America and the Carribean. A working class city, with quite, safe, suburban neighborhoods and bustling gritty comercial and industrial sectors. The city has been well known for its Cuban community since the late 60's and early 70's. Today the city is more diverse and known for its multi-cultural population from not only Cuba but all over the Caribbean and north and south America even small communities from China and other Asian countries.
In 2007 Hialeah was named one of the most Liveable Suburbs in the nation by Forbes.
