"Heaven Knows" is a song by Donna Summer released at the height of her fame during the 1970s disco era. It is adapted from a studio recording from the Live and More album and became a Top 5 hit for Summer in the U.S. in early 1979. The song features singing by the group Brooklyn Dreams.
On the single version released by Summer (credited as Donna Summer with Brooklyn Dreams), Brooklyn Dreams lead singer Joe "Bean" Esposito sings the response to Summer, while the group provides backing vocals. However, on the version that appears on Brooklyn Dreams's 1979 album, Sleepless Nights, it is Esposito who sings the lead vocal with Summer singing the response while the group again contributes backing vocals. On the group's album, this latter version is credited to Brooklyn Dreams with Donna Summer.
In 2003, the song would later be covered by Faith Evans in the film, "The Fighting Temptations".
Heaven Knows is the first single made by melodic hardcore band Rise Against from the album Revolutions Per Minute.
"Heaven Knows" was the third single released from Squeeze's eleventh album, Ridiculous. The single version differs significantly from the original album mix, as most of Chris Difford's vocals have been erased and replaced by new vocals from Glenn Tilbrook.
Three versions of the single were released, each with a different set of live B-sides. The live tracks are the same as those found on the Live at the Royal Albert Hall CD released in 1997.
A third mix of "Heaven Knows" was featured prominently in the 1995 film Hackers, starring Angelina Jolie.
"Heaven Knows" is the second single by Taylor Hicks from his self titled debut. It was announced as the second single by Clive Davis on the American Idol Season Six finale, where Hicks subsequently performed the song. Arista is hoping the song will revive sales of Hicks' album, after the underperformance of Hicks' first single "Just To Feel That Way". It hit the radio adds on May 28, 2007. By July 2007 it had sold over 12,000 copies. As of October 2007 the single had fared only slightly better than his first single, and had not increased sales of the album as was hoped.
The song samples Ray Charles' "What'd I Say" and Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar".
