Hamlet (1948 film) (Wikipedia.org)

Hamlet is a 1948 British film adaptation of William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, directed by and starring Sir Laurence Olivier. Hamlet was Olivier's second film as director, and also the second of his three Shakespeare films. It is the only one of Olivier's directorial efforts to be filmed in black and white.

Olivier's Hamlet is the Shakespeare film that has received the most prestigious accolades, winning the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Actor. However, it proved controversial among Shakespearean purists, who felt that Olivier had made too many alterations and excisions to the four-hour play by cutting nearly two hours worth of content.

Hamlet (1996 film) (Wikipedia.org)

Hamlet is a 1996 film version of William Shakespeare's classic play of the same name, adapted and directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also stars in the title role as Prince Hamlet. It is set in the 19th century, and uses Blenheim Palace for exterior scenes. It co-stars Derek Jacobi as King Claudius, Julie Christie as Queen Gertrude, Kate Winslet as Ophelia, Richard Briers as Polonius, and Nicholas Farrell as Horatio.

The film is notable as the first unabridged theatrical film version of the play. The complete film runs at just over four hours. The longest version of the play prior to the 1996 film was the 1980 BBC television version starring Derek Jacobi, which runs three-and-a-half hours. A shorter edit of the Branagh film, approximately two-and-a-half hours long, was shown in some markets.

Hamlet (1990 film) (Wikipedia.org)

Hamlet is an Academy Award nominated 1990 film based on the Shakespearean play of the same name. Mel Gibson has the title role as the young Prince Hamlet, Glenn Close plays his mother, Queen Gertrude, Alan Bates plays his uncle, now King Claudius, Paul Scofield appears as the ghost of Hamlet's Father, Ian Holm plays Polonius, and Helena Bonham Carter plays his love Ophelia. It was directed by Franco Zeffirelli.

The cast includes three actors — Scofield, Bates, and Holm — who had themselves played Hamlet on stage or film. It also features two actors - Stephen Dillane and Michael Maloney - who went on to play Hamlet onstage.

The movie was nominated for Best Art Direction,Best Costume Design, Original Score and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven, and Dover Castle were used as locations in the film.

Hamlet (2000 film) (Wikipedia.org)

Hamlet, also referred to as Hamlet 2000, is an American film by Michael Almereyda, released in 2000, set in contemporary New York City, and based on the Shakespeare play of the same name. Ethan Hawke plays Hamlet as a film student, Julia Stiles co-stars as Ophelia, Laertes by Liev Schreiber, Uncle Claudius is played by Kyle MacLachlan, and Polonius by Bill Murray.

In this version of Hamlet, Claudius becomes King and CEO of "Denmark Corporation", having taken over the firm by killing his brother, Hamlet's father.

The film is notable for its modern setting and inclusion of modern technology such as video cameras, Polaroid cameras, and surveillance bugs. For example, the ghost of Hamlet's murdered father first appears on closed-circuit TV.

Hamlet (1969 film) (Wikipedia.org)

Hamlet is a 1969 British film adaptation of the play of the same title by Shakespeare, starring Nicol Williamson as Prince Hamlet. It was directed by Tony Richardson and based on his own stage production at the Roundhouse theatre in London. The film also stars Anthony Hopkins as King Claudius, Judy Parfitt as Queen Gertrude, Marianne Faithfull as Ophelia, Mark Dignam as Polonius, Gordon Jackson as Horatio, and Michael Pennington as Laertes.

The film, a departure from big-budget Hollywood renditions of classics, was made with a small budget and a very minimalist set, consisting of Renaissance fixtures and costumes in a dark, shadowed space. A brick tunnel is used for the scenes on the battlements. The Ghost of Hamlet's father is represented only by a light shining on the observers.

Hamlet (1920 film) (Wikipedia.org)

Hamlet is a 1920 film adaptation of the William Shakespeare play Hamlet starring Danish silent film legend Asta Nielsen.

In this interpretation, inspired by Dr. Edward P. Vining's book The Mystery of Hamlet, Hamlet is born female and disguised as a male to preserve the lineage. Though a radical interpretation, the New York Times said this film, "holds a secure place in class with the best." (11/9/1921)

Directed by Svend Gade & Heinz Schall

Hamlet at Elsinore (Wikipedia.org)

Hamlet, a.k.a. Hamlet at Elsinore, is a 1964 made-for-television production of Shakespeare's play. Presented in the UK on the BBC, and in the U.S. on NET in 1965, it won wide acclaim both for its performances and for being filmed entirely at Elsinore, in the castle in which scholars believe that the play is set. At a length of nearly three hours, it was very likely the longest production of the play presented on American television up to that time.

The film starred Christopher Plummer as the melancholy Prince of Denmark. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for his performance. Supporting performances were given by such actors as Robert Shaw (as Claudius), and Michael Caine, in his only filmed Shakespeare performance so far, as Horatio. Both actors were, at the time, almost completely unknown to American audiences, and Plummer had only recently gained popularity in the U.S. because of his portrayal of Captain Von Trapp in the smash hit musical film The Sound of Music.

Although clips of the film (revealing it to be in startlingly good condition) are very rarely shown on television, it has, unfortunately slipped into obscurity, never having been released on VHS or DVD, not seen complete on television for many years, and remembered fondly mostly by those who saw it upon its first telecasts. The film was directed by Philip Saville.

Set in a surrealistic, nightmarish, Kafkaesque no man's land, this version of the famous Shakespeare play centres on the ghostly, supernatural aspects of the play. The text is the original Shakepearean, but the characters' personalities are changed, so for example, Polonius (originally a doddering old man) becomes Polonia a scheming femme fatale, who is plotting to get her younger sister Ophelia (who she controls through the use of addictive drugs) married into the royal family. It's dramatically shot, and is not so much a modern version (there are no references or images of the modern world at all) as a lateral concept. Written by Alexander Fodor

Actor Dominic Stewart, who played Polonius, died during the post-production phase. As some of Polonius' voice over material had not yet been recorded, the part was re-voiced by Gerry Doherty.

The film received its world premiere at the Shakespeare Association of America Annual Conference in Bermuda in 2005.

William Shakespeare's tale of tragedy of murder and revenge in the royal halls of medieval Denmark. Claudius, brother to the King, conniving with the Queen, poisons the monarch and seizes the throne, taking the widowed Gertrude for his bride. Hamlet, son of the murdered King, mournful of his father's death and mother's hasty marriage, is confronted by the ghost of the late King who reveals the manner of his murder. Seeking revenge, Hamlet recreates the monstrous deed in a play with the help of some traveling actors to torment the conscience of the evil Claudius. In a visit with his mother, Hamlet expresses his anger and disappointment concerning her swiftly untimed marriage. Thinking a concealed spy in his mother's chamber to be the lurking Claudius, he mistakenly kills the meddling counselor, Polonius, father of Ophelia and Laertes. Claudius, on the pretext that Hamlet will be endangered by his subjects for the murder of Polonius, sends the prince to England. Written by alfiehitchie

This is a Great Performances presentation of Joseph Papp's 1990 New York Shakespeare Festival production of the play. Hamlet returns from university for his father's funeral to find his uncle married to his mother. Prompted by his father's ghost, Hamlet carries out his investigation and revenge. Written by Kathy Li

Danish silent movie-star Asta Nielsen formed her own production company to make this film, in which new elements are combined with features (and a few lines) familiar from Shakespeare's version of the legend. The most important of these changes sees Hamlet made into a female character - a princess forced to masquerade as a man by her scheming mother; from this follows Hamlet's secret passion for Horatio and rivalry with Ophelia for his love. Queen Gertrude is here presented as conspiring in her first husband's murder, and the old king's ghost does not appear - young Hamlet merely hears a voice from the tomb and (apparently) dreams of him. In addition, Hamlet now kills Claudius (in a fire) immediately upon returning from Norway with an army led by old school- friend Fortinbras, and it falls to Gertrude to engineer Hamlet's death in the fencing match as well as kill herself by accidentally drinking the poisoned wine. From the author of "Romeo and Juliet"... the love story of Hamlet and Ophelia.

The Hamlet of our time, for our time.

Hamlet (imdb.com)

This was the first American production of a Shakespeare play ever presented on network television which was more than an hour in length. There had been other Shakespeare productions on American TV (such as Walter Hampden's "Macbeth") before this "Hamlet", but they had reduced the plays being shown to only an hour. Maurice Evans had already starred in several Broadway productions of "Hamlet". This production also marked Evans' debut on network TV.

Zefferelli does yet another Shakespeare, with less success than he had with Taming of the Shrew or Romeo and Juliet. Hamlet returns to Denmark when his father, the King, dies. His mother Gertrude has already married Hamlet's uncle Claudius, the new King. They urge Hamlet to marry his beloved Ophelia. But soon the ghost of Hamlet's father appears and tells Hamlet that he was murdered by Claudius and Gertrude. Hamlet must choose between passive acquiescence and the need for a vengeance which might lead to tragedy. Written by Reid Gagle

Sir John Gielgud directed this "Electronovision" taping of the play "Hamlet" performed at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater on Broadway in 1964 ("Electronovision" was a short-lived gimmick which was basically closed-circuit TV). The most unusual thing about this film is that the actors are in street clothes instead of period costumes, and the sets are minimal, to say the least. Written by frankfob2@yahoo.com

Hamlet (imdb.com)

Hamlet, son of the king of Denmark, is summoned home for his father's funeral and his mother's wedding to his uncle. In a supernatural episode, he discovers that his uncle, whom he hates anyway, murdered his father. In an incredibly convoluted plot--the most complicated and most interesting in all literature--he manages to (impossible to put this in exact order) feign (or perhaps not to feign) madness, murder the "prime minister," love and then unlove an innocent whom he drives to madness, plot and then unplot against the uncle, direct a play within a play, successfully conspire against the lives of two well-meaning friends, and finally take his revenge on the uncle, but only at the cost of almost every life on stage, including his own and his mother's. The Official Version

Other than a 1910 silent version, this is the only production of "Hamlet" (so far) to actually be filmed in Elsinore, Denmark, where most of the play takes place.

Hamlet (imdb.com)

New York, 2000. A specter in the guise of the newly-dead CEO of Denmark Corporation appears to Hamlet, tells of murder most foul, demands revenge, and identifies the killer as Claudius, the new head of Denmark, Hamlet's uncle and now step-father. Hamlet must determine if the ghost is truly his father, and if Claudius did the deed. To buy time, Hamlet feigns madness; to catch his uncle's conscience, he invites him to watch a film he's made that shows a tale of murder. Finally convinced of Claudius's guilt, Hamlet must avenge his father. Claudius now knows Hamlet is a threat and even uses Ophelia, Hamlet's love, in his own plots against the young man.
