Harold John "Hal" Smith (August 24, 1916 - January 28, 1994) was an American character actor and voice-over artist.
Harold Wayne Smith (born December 7, 1930 in West Frankfort, Illinois) is a former utility player in Major League Baseball from 1955-1964.
Harold Raymond Smith (born June 1, 1931 in Barling, Arkansas) is a former catcher in Major League Baseball who played from 1956 through 1965 in baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals (1956-1961) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1965). Smith batted and threw right handed. He debuted on May 2, 1956, and played his final game on July 8, 1965.
Smith was a competent catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals during six years. An All-Star in 1957 and 1959, he was disabled in 1961 after suffering heart ailments. In 1965, he appeared in four games for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In a seven-season career, Smith was a .258 hitter with 23 home runs and 172 RBI in 570 games. As a catcher, he appeared in 548 games and recorded 2810 putouts, 247 assists, and only 33 errors in 2890 total chances for a .989 fielding percentage.
Smith also worked a long time for the Cardinals organization as major league coach, minor league manager and scout, and coached for the Pirates, Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers.
He alternated with actor/game show host Jack Bailey as the voice of Walt Disney's Goofy after the orginal voice artist, Pinto Colvig, died in 1967.
Provided the voice of the much beloved "Mr. Whittaker" in the very popular radio kids program Adventure in Odyssey.
Hal Smith's character, "Mr. Whittaker", from the radio program "Adventures In Odyssey" was recently brought back with Paul Herlinger handling his voice.
Reprised his role of Otis Campbell, Mayberry's town drunk on the "Andy Griffith Show, The" (1960) in country singer Alan Jackson (I)'s 1991 video, "Don't Rock the Jukebox."
One of the most prolific cartoon voicepersons in entertainment history, most of his work having been done for Hanna-Barbera. Related to this, Smith played the character "Cartoon King" on a 1970 episode of "The Brady Bunch."
Is interred in the mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetary, in Santa Monica, California, USA.
Only child Terry Jay Smith died on October 11, 1998.
