Gracie is a 2007 American sports/historical fiction film directed by Davis Guggenheim. It stars Carly Schroeder as Gracie Bowen, Dermot Mulroney as Bryan Bowen, Elisabeth Shue as Lindsay Bowen, Jesse Lee Soffer as Johnny Bowen, and Andrew Shue as Coach Owen Clark.
Gracie takes place in New Jersey in 1978 before Title IX (which was passed in 1972) had a chance to take effect blank">A Star’s (Pre-Celebrity) Turn on the Soccer Field from _The New York Times and when women's football (soccer) did not exist. Its central protagonist, Gracie overcomes the loss of her brother by convincing her family and school to allow her to play varsity soccer on an all-boys team. It is loosely based on the childhood experiences of Elizabeth Shue.
The novel Gracie (by fantasy and science fiction author Suzanne Weyn) was released in June 2007.
The female lead was to be cast as part of a nationwide search for an unknown. After two months they went with "Lizzie McGuire" star Carly Schroeder
Is inspired by events in the life of Elisabeth Shue while growing up, who played soccer with the boys for as long as she could before turning her focus to gymnastics.
The school and town where 'Gracie' was filmed is the same place where Elisabeth Shue grew up and went to school.
After months of auditions, 'Carly Schroeder' was chosen from over 2,000 girls for the character of Gracie.
