The Goodman School of Drama is now renamed The Theatre School at DePaul University. Founded in 1925 in Chicago, Illinois, a city with a rich theatrical heritage, the Goodman School became part of DePaul University in 1978. The Theatre School is the Midwest region's oldest acting conservatory and is ranked as one of the top professional theatrical training programs in the United States, enrolling approximately 300 students from North America and abroad. The Theatre School's main performance space is the Merle Reskin Theatre (formerly Blackstone Theatre) in Downtown Chicago.
With 14 areas of study, The Theatre School offers B.F.A. degrees in Acting, Costume Design, Costume Technology, Lighting Design, Scenic Design, Theatre Technology, Stage Management, Playwriting, Theatre Management, Dramaturgy/Criticism and Theatre Arts. The M.F.A. program confers degrees in Acting, Directing, and Arts Leadership.
The Theatre School practices a “learning by doing” philosophy, putting on almost two dozen theatrical productions each season. The Theatre School Showcase features contemporary and classic plays, while the Chicago Playworks for Families and Young Audiences presents plays for children.
