Glitter is a drama film starring Mariah Carey, produced by 20th Century Fox and Columbia Pictures and released in 2001. It centers on the life and times of a struggling singer from the early club music scene in the 1980s. Its soundtrack album, Glitter was Carey's eighth studio album, a concept album of the sounds of the early 1980s. Largely panned by critics and audiences alike, the movie performed poorly in theatres after it was labelled a vanity project and being an almost autobiographical account of Carey's life.
The film was shot in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
Glitter is an American television drama series screened on the ABC network during the 1984-1985 season.
The series was executive produced by Aaron Spelling and was set behind the scenes of a top entertainment magazine, "Glitter", attempting to combine the urgency of journalism and business politics with the glamorous lifestyles of the rich and famous featured in the pages of the magazine. The leading cast members were David Birney, Morgan Brittany, Melinda Culea and Arthur Hill.
The series was similar to two other popular ABC shows, The Love Boat and Hotel, in that each week it heavily featured high profile guest appearances from famous celebrities, such as Ginger Rogers and Cyd Charisse. However, unlike the other series, Glitter was not a success and was cancelled after less than one season with its last airing on Christmas night (December 25th) 1984.
Another series from Aaron Spelling that has many guest stars each week that follows the formula used in other Spelling series, like LOVE BOAT and HOTEL. The setting for this series, is GLITTER, a magazine. Every week two pairs of reporters are sent to get the dirt on a story they hear of. Seen most often are Sam Dillon and Kate Simpson, and seen on an alternating basis are Pete Bozak and Jennifer Douglas, and Terry Randolph and Earl Tobin. Also thrown into the mix are Angels and Chip who are magazine's receptionist and copy boy respectively, who are also dating. And there's also Clive, the magazine's photographer, and Shelley, the magazine's lonely gossip columnist. And rounding the cast is Arthur Hardwick, the magazine's publisher, and not known to many, Kate's father. Written by
Pop star Mariah Carey plays Billie Frank, a shy, young mixed-race girl who is sent away by her alcoholic mother at a very early age. At an orphanage, she befriends Louise (Da Brat) and Roxanne (Tia Texada). Flash forward to 1983. Billie and her friends are spotted by a record producer, Timothy Walker (Terrence Howard), who wants them to sing backup for his latest pop-music discovery. But when super DJ Dice (Max Beesley) hears Billie's incredible voice, he makes a shady deal with Timothy to get her out of that dead-end situation. Soon, Billie and Dice are making hits inside the studio, and falling in love outside of it. Eventually, the pressure of her newfound celebrity puts too heavy a strain on Billie, forcing her to decide what it is she really wants from Dice, and what she wants for herself.
