Girlfriends is an NAACP Image Award and Emmy Award nominated American sitcom. The show was created by Mara Brock Akil and produced by Kelsey Grammer (Cheers, Frasier). It premiered in 2000 on UPN, and continues to air on UPN's successor network, The CW. The theme song to Girlfriends is sung by R&B musician Angie Stone.
When Girlfriends returned in fall 2007 for its 8th season in the same time slot, it became the longest-running live-action sitcom currently on network television, as well as one of the highest-rated scripted shows on television among African-American adults and women 18-34, including their spin-off The Game.
The 8th and final season of Girlfriends premiered Monday, October 1. A preview of the next episode can be seen at blank">CWTV.
The final two episodes recorded before the strike have aired back-to-back on Monday, February 11 at 9/8c. However, this was not a 2-part episode. Then, the show (along with the other comedies) will move to Sundays starting on February 10. This is due to the on-going writer's strike and the returning of CW's reality series. On February 13, 2008, it was announced by a CW representative that a proper series finale would not be done because it would be too expensive. The announcement confirms that the show has now been cancelled. However, starting on March 23, the series will run its final produced episode on a new timeslot, Sundays at 9:30 P.M. The series finale however will be short clips of past seasons.
Along with _Everybody Hates Chris, Girlfriends is one of two remaining show to have aired both on UPN and on the CW
After the sixth season, the show was picked up by The CW because UPN merged with The WB to form The CW.
