"Girlfriend" is the fourth single from Alicia Keys' debut album Songs in A Minor. Despite Keys' debut single "Fallin" being sent to radio stations first, "Girlfriend" started receiving airplay from R&B stations in 2001, prior to its official single release in 2002. This was the songs only chart appearance in the U.S. as it was not released as an official single there, however, "Girlfriend" was released in Europe, Asia and Australia in 2002 and generally outpeaked previous single "How Come You Don't Call Me", reaching number 24 in the UK ("How Come You Don't Call Me" made number 26) and the top 20 in Australia, peaking at number thirteen there. . It was not the album version of "Girlfriend" that was released as the single version. The version that featured in the songs music video and was serviced to radio was the 'KrucialKeys Sista Girl Mix'.
"Girlfriend" is the fifth and last single to be released by singer Michael Jackson from his hugely-successful album, Off the Wall in 1980. The single was only released in the UK, where it performed rather poorly, just managing to enter the top 50 at #41 and falling out of the top 100 completely after five weeks.
It also is the first collaboration between Jackson and ex-Beatle Paul McCartney. They also worked together on "The Girl Is Mine" from Thriller and two tracks from McCartney's Pipes of Peace album, "Say Say Say" and "The Man". The musical partnership would end in the 1980s after Jackson purchased the ATV Music catalog, which held the rights to numerous Beatles tracks, which McCartney contested.
This song originally appeared on Paul McCartney & Wings' 1978 album London Town.
"Girlfriend" is a 2006 single from the British rock band The Darkness from their second album One Way Ticket to Hell... And Back. Released on 22 May 2006, it was the third single from the album.
The song is written from the perspective of a man who has cheated on his girlfriend with another woman. He tells his now angry girlfriend in the first verse that the other girl meant nothing to him. In the second verse he admits that the relationship is over and his once girlfriend is now his ex.
The music video for the song is inspired by the film Flashdance.
