Gidget is an American film starring 1950s teen icon Sandra Dee, released in 1959 by Columbia Pictures. Adapted from the novel by Frederick Kohner, and with a screenplay by Gabrielle Upton, this popular film was directed by Paul Wendkos. It follows the life of teenager Gidget and friends, in a predictably sweet love story.
There were two sequels, Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961), starring Deborah Walley, and Gidget Goes to Rome (1963), starring Cindy Carol.
The character Gidget has been revived several times, first in the film sequels and then in a 1965 television sitcom starring a teenage Sally Field, whose brown hair was a departure from the standard blonde (although Deborah Walley was a redhead). Very young guest stars included Paul Lynde, Bonnie Franklin, and Daniel J. Travanti (of Hill Street Blues fame). This Gidget character was brought back as an adult in a little-watched 1980s television sitcom The New Gidget.
Gidget is an American sitcom first broadcast on ABC from September 15, 1965 through April 21, 1966. The series is a Screen Gems production about a surfing, boy-crazy fifteen-year-old southern California girl and her widowed father, an English professor at UCLA. Sally Field starred as Frances "Gidget" Lawrence with Don Porter playing her father Russell Lawrence. Gidget was among the first regularly-scheduled color programs on ABC, but did poorly in the Neilsen ratings and was cancelled at the end of its first season. The show gained some popularity in reruns and was released to DVD in 2006.
Frances "Gidget" Lawrence lives with her widowed college professor father in California. Anne is her older sister who is married to John Cooper, a psychology student. Gidget spends most of her free time at the beach, hanging out with friends and surfing. She also has a knack for getting in and out of trouble. Gidget speaks to the audience during her journey to adulthood, letting them know exactly what's on her mind and what she's discovered about life. Written by Anonymous
Due to an accident while swimming in the sea, Francis meets the surfer Moondoggy. She's fascinated of his sport and starts to hang out with his clique. Although they make fun of her at first, they teach her to surf. Soon she's accepted and given the nickname "Gidget". But it's hard work to become more than a friend to Moondoggy.
