The Gibson Amphitheatre (formerly Universal Amphitheatre) is a theatre located in Universal City, California, USA. It was originally built in 1972 as an outdoor venue, but was remodeled and converted into an indoor theatre in 1982. It seats up to 6,189 for concerts, including 6,089 chairback seats (3,900 in the main level and 2,189 in the mezzanine). It is the third-largest theatre in California, behind the Shrine Auditorium and Nokia Theatre, two other Los Angeles venues. The theatre is best known for its acoustics and its sightlines, considered the best of any theatre in North America.
Major events at the Gibson Amphitheatre include the 2005 WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony, the MTV Movie Awards (recently the 2007 MTV Movie Awards), and various musical acts, as well as the annual Teen Choice Awards, and has been the site to acts such as Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Hilary Duff, Madonna, ManĂ¡, Tina Turner, New Edition, Brian McKnight, Chris Brown, Eric Clapton, Guns N' Roses,Gloria Trevi, Sam Glaser, Deftones, Britney Spears, The Who, Tenacious D, Switchfoot, Relient K, The Smiths, Steve Martin, and the inaugural Sounds of the Underground 2006, in which this concert had security running around non-stop due to the frenzied audience. Also the 2008 IIFA Awards are set to take place at the Amphitheatre.
