Due to the activities of Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), a philosopher and Tibetan religious leader, and especially the foundation of the Monastery Ganden in 1410, his followers became to be known as "Gandenbas". Tsongkhapa never announced the establishment of a new monastic order, it was not until later, when Tsongkhapa's writings were criticized by writers of the Sakya order, that the Gandenbas distinguished themselves from Sakya by calling themselves Gelugpas ("virtuous ones"). The term Gelug has been used since then for his presentation of the Dharma and his followers, also known as the Yellow Hat sect. Since the establishment of Ganden monastery the Ganden Tripa is the nominal head of the Gelug school, though its most influential figure is the Dalai Lama.
