Gary Powell (born 11 November 1969) is a drummer with the band Dirty Pretty Things. He was formerly the drummer for The Libertines and Eddy Grant. He has also played with the New York Dolls for their 2004 reunion shows.
He joined The Libertines in 2001 after being introduced to the frontmen Carl Barât and Pete Doherty by their then manager Banny Poostchi. Gary is now with the band Dirty Pretty Things with former Libertines bandmate Barât.
Something of a cult figure and fan favourite, due to his Adidas poppers and regular topless appearances, Dirty Pretty Things gigs are often punctuated by chants of 'Gary, Gary, Gary'.
Gary learnt his drumming skills as a child while marching in a American styled drum corps called Sunrisers in his native Birmingham.
Powell’s sister, Hope Powell has enjoyed fair success as the first full time head coach of the England women’s football (soccer) team.
Gary Powell is a British actor. He is possibly best known for playing the character Laurie Bates in the BBC soap opera EastEnders. Laurie made his first screen appearance in September 1989 as a love interest for Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth), but the character was one of many to be written out of the serial early in 1990, following the introduction of executive producer, Michael Ferguson.
Powell's other television work has included roles in: Between The Lines (1992); Inspector Morse (1987; 1995); Thief Takers (1996); Kavanagh QC (1997); Beech is Back (2001); A Touch Of Frost (2003); Judge John Deed (2005); Holby City (2005); The Golden Hour (2005); Tom Brown's Schooldays (2005); The Bill (2005; 2006); Five Days (2006) and Doctor Who episode 42, playing Dev Ashton (2007).
Film credits have included: Crush (2001); From Hell (2001) and Hollywoodland (2006).
Gary Powell (born January 30, 1979) is a Rugby Union player, currently with the Cardiff Blues.
