From Here to Eternity is a 1953 drama film based on the novel of the same name by James Jones. It deals with the troubles of soldiers stationed on Hawaii in the days just before the attack on Pearl Harbor. The material of the rather explicit novel had to be considerably toned down to appease the censors of the time. For example, in the famous beach scene, it is less obvious that Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster's characters have actually been having sex than it is in the novel and the later, more frank 1979 miniseries based on the book.
From Here to Eternity was a six-hour 1979 television mini-series, followed by a thirteen episode 1980 television series.
The mini-series was a remake of the 1953 film From Here to Eternity, based on the 1951 novel of the same name. All three concluded with the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.
The story details the men and families of G Company, 24th Infantry Division. With the main sub-plot being Sgt. Warden’s (William Devane) ongoing affair with Karen Holmes (Natalie Wood), the wife of his commanding officer.
Story takes place at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii just before the attack by the Japanese on December 7, 1941. The main plot deals with the adulterous love affair between Sgt. Warden and Karen Holmes, who's married to Warden's commanding officer Captain Dana Holmes. Written by Marty McKee
It's 1941. Robert E. Lee Prewitt has requested Army transfer and has ended up at Schofield in Hawaii. His new captain, Dana Holmes, has heard of his boxing prowess and is keen to get him to represent the company. However, 'Prew' is adamant that he doesn't box anymore, so Captain Holmes gets his subordinates to make his life a living hell. Meanwhile Sergeant Warden starts seeing the captain's wife, who has a history of seeking external relief from a troubled marriage. Prew's friend Maggio has a few altercations with the sadistic stockade Sergeant 'Fatso' Judson, and Prew begins falling in love with social club employee Lorene. Unbeknownst to anyone, the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor looms in the distance. Written by Ed Sutton
